LINCOLN, Neb. – After staying within striking distance after day two of the NAIA Women's Golf National Championships, Cassidy Scantland struggled to find consistency in round three and dropped off the pace. Her 10-over par, 82, put her just outside the Top 40 when she came off the 18th green with half of the field still yet to tee off. By the end of the day, Scantland was tied for 24th at 18-over-par through 54 holes to make the cut for Friday's final round.
Â
Three big holes were the difference between a solid round and a disappointing round. Scantland, who made only one double bogey in the first two rounds of play, made a double and two triple bogeys today.
Â
On the par four, fourth hole, Scantland hit her drive just a few feet under a tree and decided to take a risky shot to advance the ball onto the green. But the risk did not pay off, as Scantland mishit her second and third shots to set up a difficult lob shot for par. The pitch went past the hole and Scantland two putted for her first double bogey.
Â
The final holes on the front and back nine, also gave fits for the 19-year old. Those two triple bogeys to go out and come back in, killed the confidence level and Scantland was unable to recover.
Â
Those three holes were the difference maker after playing the other 15 holes at one-over par.
Â
Scantland did come back and pick up two birdies after two of the big number holes. On the par five, sixth hole, Scantland spun a 72-yard wedge just three feet short of the pin and made her first birdie. Also, after the double bogey on No. 9, Scantland came back with a birdie on No. 10.
Â
Now it's just wait and see what happens. The top 40 individual golfers (with ties) which are not on one of the Top 17 teams will make the cut and advance into the final round starting at 7:50 a.m. on Friday.
Â
The leader entering the day, Daniela Martinez of Northwood (Texas), shot 77 and slipped to third place, while Oklahoma City's Elia Folch and Savannah College of Art and Design golfer Alazne Urizar both shot 73 to claim a tie for the tournamnet lead at four-over par. Folch's performance helped push Oklahoma City, the defending champion, into a team tie for first-place with No. 1 SCAD at +50 entering the final day.
Tee times for the final round are yet to be announced.
