LINCOLN, Neb. – Lady Tiger freshman Cassidy Scantland struggled to find any consistency in her game Friday morning. Just a few holes once again came between finishing strong and a round she would like to forget.
Scantland, making her first NAIA National Championship appearance, finished tied for 34
th place in the 140-player field at 26-over par.
Â
It was only the second time any Lady Tiger has qualified for the National Tournament, as freshman Lauren Scholl did so in 2006.
Â
Alazne Urizar from SCAD Savannah won the individual national championsip with a four round total of 291 (+3). Oklahoma Christian University and SCAD Savannah both finished the tournament at 57-over par after OCU came back from five strokes down on the final hole to force a 10-player playoff. OCU ended up winning the playoff to capture its second consecutive national championship.
Â
Campbellsville's Scantland got into trouble on a few holes and it ended up costing her valuable shots and a chance to be named to the All-Tournament team (Top 15).
Â
On seven of the first 10 holes, Scantland had birdie putts but was only able to capitalize on one, the par four, 13th hole.
Â
Scantland bogeyed No. 12 and No. 15 but the birdie came in handy, as she finished one-over through her first nine holes.
Â
But then the front nine haunted the freshman. Scantland missed her drive off the tee right on No. 1 and scalded her second shot out of the rough but luckily the ball landed 10 feet from the hole. Her birdie attempt came up just short and had to settle for a par.
Â
The wheels started to fall off on the par-three, second hole. Scantland caught the ball fat off the tee and it only traveled 75 yards. Her approach shot was shanked right and ended up in the cart path. Scantland ended up recording a triple bogey for the hole, dropping her to four over through 11 holes.
Â
But more big numbers came up in three of the final four holes. Scantland got into trouble off the tee and was unable to salvage a par on holes six through eight.
Â
Out of the eight dropped shots in round four, five of those came in two holes and Scantland was unable to recover. Overall through the tournament, Scantland finished with eight birdies (four came in round one), 39 pars and 25 bogeys or worse.
Â
It was a great learning experience for the freshman, but she was definitely disappointed in how she finished.
Â
"It was a great experience," said Scantland. "I am really thankful that I was able to qualify and make the national tournament. But I need to go back home and work on a few things to get back to where I want to be. Hopefully I can get the opportunity to make another run at it next year."
Â
The reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Year, plans on playing in five tournaments this summer to get ready for the upcoming fall schedule.
Â
Lady Tiger head coach Brent Vernon has signed four incoming freshman to compliment the five freshman that played this past spring and finished third in the MSC.
