CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville University will call on an alumna to head its women's golf program in 2014 with the recent hiring of Kim Goodin.

Former coach, Brent Vernon, resigned this week so he could spend more time with the men's basketball program where he had split responsibilities the past two years.
 

"Coach Vernon has set us up very well," said Goodin, a Columbia, Ky. native. "He needs to be commended for the players he has recruited for this program."

 

Goodin is inherently familiar with Campbellsville, having two nieces who played golf, the most recent being sophomore-to-be Ashley Goodin. She also isn't new to the coaching ranks, having coached boys and girls golf at Adair County High on two different occasions — where she taught for 16 years and ended her education career with a 13-year stint as assistant principal of John Adair Intermediate School.

 

At Goodin's side will be assistant Lauren Willis, who played golf at CU for three years (2009-2012). Willis will continue as the Central Kentucky/Local Market Admissions Counselor for Campbellsville University, a position she has held for the past two years. She will handle some of the off-season conditioning, recruiting, practice sessions and tournaments.

 

Goodin played a year of golf at the University of Kentucky before transferring to then Campbellsville College in 1981 to play softball for Donna Wise. She won numerous honors as a player and a coach during her careers at Adair County High and Campbellsville College.

 

After retiring as an educator in 2013, Goodin began teaching part time in the university's Human Performance Department where she will continue to handle a limited class load.

 

"We are excited to have Kim join us as our head women's golf coach," said Director of Athletics Rusty Hollingsworth. "Her previous coaching experience and love for the game will help her continue to build a strong program. My thanks to Brent Vernon for doing a great job with the squad during the last two years. Brent has volunteered to help coach Goodin make this a very smooth transition."

 

Campbellsville will return everyone from a five-player 2013-14 squad with MSC Freshman and Player of the Year Cassidy Scantland, Greensburg, Ky., leading the way. Scantland will be joined by fellow sophomores Anna Marie Hyatt, Lawrenceburg, Ky.; Ashley Goodin, Columbia, Ky.; Grace Gupton, Louisville, Ky.; and Olivia Parrott, Greensburg, Ky. Joining those five sophomores will be freshmen Taylor Phelps, Glasgow, Ky.; Rachel Carter, Scottsville, Ky., Carlie Hazel, Campbellsville, Ky.; Kellimae Polston, Tompkinsville, Ky.; and Emily Antle, Shepherdsville, Ky.; junior Annie McIntosh, Springfield, Ohio; and senior transfer Mikayla Smith, Mason City, Iowa.

 

"This opportunity has brought a little excitement to my life," admitted Goodin. "The competitive part of me has been energized and I look forward to the unbelievably healthy competition this season and for seasons to come."
