Volleyball rallies to sweep tri-match at Ohio Christian

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — Campbellsville (2-1) had to put on a big-time rally, prevailing in five sets against Ohio Christian to sweep a tri-match on the road tonight.

The Lady Tigers beat former Mid-South Conference opponent, Bluefield College (25-16, 25-20 and 25-15), prior to the come-from-behind thriller against the host Trailblazers.

Annija Abolina, a freshman from Riga, Latvia, punctuated the win over OCU with a kill in the fifth set after back-to-back kills by the Trailblazers had closed a 14-7 spread to 14-9.

CU got out of the block slow, allowing OCU back in the first set after leading 7-2, forcing a time out by the hosts. Campbellsville led 24-22, but allowed OCU to squeak out a 30-28 win. The loss seemed to affect the Lady Tigers and OCU seized the momentum in set two.

The Trailblazers went up 21-12 and moved out to a 25-16 win.

Hannah Best served up an ace to give CU a 30-29 edge in a back-and-forth set three, and Jan Kortas' kill sealed a 31-29 win.

Campbellsville rode that momentum throughout the rest of the match, leading 9-3 and 15-8 in the fourth on another Kortas kill. CU won that set 25-17 and took an 8-4 lead in the deciding set when the Trailblazers were whistled for a net violation.

Kortas and Abolina had 23 and 21 kills, respectively, and Jackie Schwieger was good for 49 assists.

Against Bluefield, Abolina led with 11 kills. Schwieger had 16 assists and Marcella Compeau eight digs. The team had eight blocks in the match.

Campbellsville will travel to Georgetown on Wednesday, Sept. 3 to open Mid-South Conference play.
