Hazel fires 67, CU down in Presidents Cup after round one

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Campbellsville University Tiger Golf seemed to never get it going in the first round of the Presidents Cup Saturday at The Pines. Campbellsville picked up only 1 1/2 points in the Ryder Cup style match play compared to Lindsey Wilson College's 3 1/2.

"Today the guys played really well," said CU head coach Kenny Lawson. "Lindsey Wilson had some breaks go there way but they played extremely well down the end. Our guys never gave up and continued to battle."

Justin Hazel and Michael Newton were firing bullets on the greens after shooting 67 and 68, respectively. Hazel played with James Higgins and finished all square in their match against LWC's Jordan Hagan and Jonathon Grabara.

Newton and Tanner Hall picked up the one-point for CU, defeating Federico Navarro and Zack Madewell of LWC, 2-1. Newton had a chance on hole 16 to finish off the Blue Raider duo but missed his 4-foot birdie. He redeemed himself on the par four, 17th hole with the deciding par putt for the match win.

"The fact that this was match play made it a totally different mind set for me," said Newton. "We were firing at the pins and trying for red numbers on every hole we could. On 16 I had a tough putt that broke around six inches. Then on 17, the putt was much easier and straight in. It was a huge relief making that putt."

Hazel, who was playing in his second Presidents Cup  tournament picked up four birdies and an eagle in his round.

"I've hit the ball the best I have ever hit it," said Hazel. "I was striking the ball well but there were also some times that I got into trouble. I hit into the hazard on number 18 so it could have been better than that. It felt like I was putting into a wash tub today."

Campbellsville dropped the other three matches, though. Nathan Hincks and Ryan Nowe defeated CU's Jared Fannin and Michael Petitti, 3-2. Wade Cave and Dylan Bray lost to Alex Durham and Chris Butler by one and Dalton Olson and Pierce Dahl dropped their match to Jake Wall and Clayton Bradshaw by two.

The Tigers will go head-to-head against the Blue Raiders in stroke play Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m. EDT, needing to pick up six and a half points.

In the Ryder Cup scoring system, the first team to eight points will win the cup. Lindsey Wilson won the cup in 2013 by defeating Campbellsville, 10-5.
