Cumberlands pins three-set loss on Lady Tigers

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — The majority of the 2014 CU volleyball team were just sophomores in high school the last time the Lady Tigers lost to the University of the Cumberlands. It hasn't happened often, but it happened tonight.

The rebuilding process for this young team is progressing slowly, as CU (3-6, 0-2 MSC) dropped three straight sets to Cumberlands (9-4, 1-1 MSC), 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23.

Campbellsville's only previous blemish during a nine-year, 17-1 stretch came in a five-set loss in 2011.

The Lady Tigers got 15 kills from junior Jana Kortas, but CU was a minus-8 (46-38) in that statistical category to the Patriots. As a matter of fact, Campbellsville trailed by just a little in every team statistic except for service aces where three by Stephanie Lambert allowed LTV to hold a 4-3 advantage.

Cumberlands held a 44-31 assists advantage and out-dug the Lady Tigers 81-74.

Krista Mihelsone led CU with 21 assists and Marcella Compeau (22) tied UCumbs' Sydney Beck for match-high honors. Kortas and Mihelsone chipped in with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

After dropping the first two sets, CU led in the third 12-8 and 22-21, but could not hold on to force a fourth set.

JV ROLLS 2-1

Campbellsville's junior varsity shook off a 25-16 loss in set two and pulled out a three-set win, 25-21, 16-25 and 15-13.

CU (2-0) rallied from an early five-point deficit in the first of three sets, outscoring the Patriots 10-6 after gaining a 15-all tie. Set two was all Cumberlands, as the Patriots led 18-8 at one time.

Campbellsville will return home after eight straight road matches when it hosts Shawnee State Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 in a Mid-South Conference matchup in the Powell Athletic Center.
