CU splits matches on Day 1 of Olivet Nazarene Invite

BOURBONNAIS, ILL. — Campbellsville won its first match at the Olivet Nazarene Invite, but could not complete the Day 1 sweep in the nightcap, losing in straight sets to St. (Ill.) Francis.

25-12, 25-23, 22-25, 20-25 and 15-9

After beating Pikeville in a come-from-behind five-setter on Tuesday, the Lady Tigers had to rally after taking a 2-0 lead in sets.

 

Ohio Valley (4-6) came back from the deficit and pinned 25-22 and 25-20 losses on CU to force the fifth set.

 

But Campbellsville (5-7, 1-3 MSC) was able to pull out the fifth set, 15-9.

 

St. Francis 3, Campbellsville 0

25-17, 25-23 and 25-23

 

CU led briefly in the first set before losing 25-17, but led late in sets two and three before suffering a couple of two-point losses to St. Francis (10-7).

 

The Lady Tigers (5-8, 1-3 MSC) worked themselves into a 19-7 lead in set two before St. Francis went on a 12-1 run and finally caught CU at 23. The Saints scored 19 of the set's final 23 points.

 

CU led 22-20 in the third before being outscored 4-1.

 

Jana Kortas led CU with 10 kills and her teammate, Brooklyn Bowling, had eight. Marcella Compeau had a match-high 22 digs and Jackie Schwieger had 22 assists.

 

Campbellsville led in total attacks 131-121, but St. Francis proved to be the more efficient with a 34-31 kill margin.

 

Campbellsville continues in Bourbonnais, Ill. at the Holiday Inn Express Invite hosted by Olivet Nazarene University for Saturday matches with Trinity Christian (noon) and Olivet (6:00).
