CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville Tiger golf stayed even keel Tuesday and finished seven strokes better than Cumberland University to take the annual Campbellsville Invitational title. Wade Cave shot a 78 in the final round and held on late to win his first career tournament as a Tiger.
"The team showed a lot of determination and fight to come back after a not-so-hot round yesterday," said CU head coach Kenny Lawson. "This should give us great confidence and momentum going into our next tournaments."
Cave shot 70 in his first round but fell off pace in round two and finished with a 78. The 148 total was two shots ahead of Peyton Broyles (Cumberland University) and Will Boyd (University of Pikeville).
"I am very proud of Wade," said Lawson. "He has worked hard after sitting out last season because of the transfer rule. He has the potential to be one of the top golfers all season long."
Dalton Olson and Andrew Jansen were the other two lone Tigers in the top 10. Olson fired two-straight 77s, which was tied for fifth and Jansen went 78-77 to tie for 10th.
Tanner Hall and Michael Newton missed the top 10 by one stroke, both shooting 156's. Newton improved drastically after his first round of 82. The senior from Bowling Green, Ky., sank three birdies in a row in his first nine holes and was able to come away with a final round, 2-over 74.
Dylan Bray finished tied for 19th and also improved his second round score. Bray shot 84 in round one but came back and finished with a 75 in round two to keep him in the top 20.
Brooks Bennett, 160; Pierce Dahl, 183; James Higgins, 165; Matthew Razor, 165; Justin Hazel, 165; John Eastridge, 167 and Corey Boils, 170 rounded out the Tiger contingency.
