CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville University outlasted Georgetown College 2-1, Tuesday night at Finley Stadium. Mhairi Fyfe received a pass from senior Alex Shaffer and uncorked a 1-1 tie in the first overtime period with a header for the "golden goal" win.
BOX SCORE
Fyfe now leads Campbellsville with four goals and it was the first career game-winning goal for the sophomore from Livingston, Scotland.
"I am proud of the girls for not giving up," said CU head coach Thom Jones. "We worked hard and finished the game. It was a step forward from the previous few games."
Georgetown scored in the 44th minute when Jodi DeJohn beat CU goalkeeper, Amanda Howard to give the visiting Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Campbellsville struggled in the first half getting any offensive attack going, as GC goalkeeper, Brittany Moshos was not tested. CU recorded three shots and one on goal in the first 45 minutes.
But the Lady Tigers came out of the intermission with a little pressure and ended up picking up a goal off the foot of Junior Aris Kuntz. She delivered a high shot from 30-yards out, which traveled over Moshos' outreached arms. The goal knotted the game at one in the 50th minute.
Both teams went back and fourth for the remaining 40 minutes and the play started to get very physical. But Campbellsville was able to overcome a halftime deficit and picked up the "golden goal" from Fyfe in the 97th minute.
"Last week we lost in the first minute of overtime," said Jones. "This week we went to overtime and took care of business. That is the intensity I expect from this team."
Campbellsville will now travel just 17 miles down Kentucky Highway 55 for a Mid-South Conference matchup with rival Lindsey Wilson College. CU and LWC will play at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 27.
