Lady Tigers drop three close sets to St. Catharine

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville dropped its closest three-set match of the season Tuesday night, falling to St. Catharine College, 27-25, 25-23 and 30-28 in Powell Athletic Center.

The Lady Tigers battled for every point down the stretch, rallying back from a 19-10 deficit in the first set to pull within a point, 25-24. Hannah Best served four-straight points and Krista Mihelsone served three straight as part of the rally. Each had one ace.

Jade Nelson tied the match, 25-25, but a service error by Brooklyn Bowling presented the Patriots with a second match point, which was won when Jackie Schwieger was called for a double hit at the net to fall, 27-25.

CU used a pair of aces by Bowling and kills by Jana Kortas, Nelson and Rachel DeCoursey to take a 5-1 lead in set two. CU's lead was as large as six points, 18-12, before Jessie Stone helped serve a seven-point rally, including three kills by Rebecca Just. SCC pushed forward after taking the 19-18 lead to pull out a 25-23 win after another match-point error called on CU at the net.

The third set was a point-for-point rally throughout, with the largest lead belonging to CU, 16-12. Not counting the first point of the set, SCC took its first lead at 25-24 on an ace by Jodie Klein. Schwieger, Aleksandra Popovic, Kortas and Bowling had kills to help CU remain even, up to 28-28. However, a service error by Schwieger, moments after being called in the net, and an attack error by Bowling sealed the set, 30-28.

Popovic and Kortas each had 11 kills in the loss, while Schwieger had 33 assists. Marcella Compeau had 20 digs for CU. CU had eight aces in the loss, including eight by Bowling, but gave up 19 points from service errors.

CU's junior varsity team started the night and dropped its match against St. Catharine after winning the first set, 25-21, but dropped the last two 26-24 and 15-9.

Campbellsville (5-11, 1-4 MSC) will travel to Cleveland, Tenn., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27, for the Lee University Invitational. CU will meet Southern Wesleyan University at 12:15 p.m. and Lee University at 7 p.m. on Friday, and then will play Bryan College Saturday morning at 11:45 a.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan College at 4:15 p.m.
