Fighting Tigers rally for 31-13 road win at Belhaven

Box Score

JACKSON, Miss. – Campbellsville University dominated the second half Saturday for a come-from-behind victory at Belhaven, 31-13, in its first road test of the season. Campbellsville trailed 13-11 at the half, but put together a 20-point second half at H.T. Newell Field to hold on to its first-place standing in the Mid-South Conference West at 2-0.

"It's a tough conference. (At our level), it's like the SEC. You have to show up and play every week. If you don't show up and play every week, the team with the worst record can knock you off," CU head coach Perry Thomas said. "We overcame some trying situations, and a win like this on the road does a lot for your character."

Jacob Russell scored early in the first half for Campbellsville on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Chatman. Chatman ran in the 2-point try for an 8-0 lead. Belhaven answered though with two first quarter TD passes by back-up quarterback Mickey Forrest. The second came on a fourth down, 74-yard pass to go up 13-8.

Deondre Woody recovered a fumble for the Tigers at the Belhaven 27 to help set up a late 20-yard first-half field goal by Will Ward.

The second half was nearly all Campbellsville. Late in the third quarter (1:25), Russell hit Demytreus Gipson for a 10-yard touchdown pass, but the 2-point try failed. Russell hit Neil Wilson with 7:51 left in the fourth on a 12-yard TD and then Russell punched in a 1-yard run with 3:41 to play for his first rushing touchdown as a Fighting Tiger.

CU's last touchdown was set up by a 62-yard interception return by James Gardner to the CU 1. Percy Minor later picked off Forrest in the end zone with less than two minutes to play to seal the win, his second interception in the end zone in as many weeks.

Campbellsville forced four turnovers in the win and held Belhaven to 2-of-6 on fourth down and 4-of-14 on third down. CU's pressure helped hold Belhaven to a season-low 72 plays on offense.

Blake Young led the Tigers' defense with 10 tackles, six solo. Steven Delgado, Minor, Stephon Tanga and Dakwain Tarrance each had six tackles. Delgado also had a fumble recovery.

Russell finished with 219 passing yards to become the fastest CU quarterback to collect 1,000 yards in a season (1,022). Chatman led CU's receivers with 110 yards on six catches. The Tigers had 156 yards rushing.

Campbellsville (3-1, 2-1 MSC West) will travel to Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Ky., Saturday, Oct. 4. KCU (3-2, 1-1 MSC East) entered the week ranked No. 23 in the NAIA but lost Sept. 27 at No. 6 Georgetown College, 48-14.
