Lady Tigers avoid goose egg at Viterbo with 3-0 win

LaCrosse, Wisc. — Campbellsville avoided a tournament goose egg at Viterbo and also a five-match losing streak by defeating Haskell University today, 3-0.



 

Campbellsville 3, Haskell 0

25-16, 25-11 and 25-18

 

The Lady Tigers ran away with the first two sets and, got sloppy in the third, but played just good enough to complete the sweep of the Indians (3-4).

 

Jana Kortas had 10 kills and career-high 12 digs in leading CU. Brianna Harman also had 10 kills and Krista Mihelsone led the team with four of its seven service aces. Marcella Compeau had a 19-dig match.

 

In set one, CU built a 16-9 lead and then won nine of the next 16 points to win, 25-16.

 

A 5-0 run off Mihelson's serve in the second set the stage for a 25-11 win. CU led 12-3, 18-6 and then cruised.

 

In the third, the Lady Tigers (3-5, 0-1 MSC) had to rally from a 10-6 deficit, using two Stephanie Lambert kills and an ace by Mihelsone. After pushing ahead to an 18-15 spread, Campbellsville did what it needed to do and punctuated the win on a Brianna Harman kill.

  

Bellevue University 3, Campbellsville 0

26-24, 27-25 and 25-22

 

Campbellsville had late leads in all three sets, but never could get the big point when it needed it, losing to Bellevue (1-11) in the third match of the two-day Viterbo University Volleyball Tournament.

 

The Lady Tigers (2-5) led 22-16 in the first set and committed two crucial service errors down the stretch that gave the Bruins extra chances at points. The Bruins took advantage throughout the match.

 

CU evened set two at 25-all, but a service ace by Rachel Wald and an attack error, one of 15 in the match, proved crucial for the Lady Tigers.

 

Campbellsville led 22-20 in the final set, but two attack errors and a ball handling error allowed Bellevue to pull out a 25-22 win.

 

Jackie Schwieger (21) and Krista Mihelsone (9) shared 30 assists while Jana Kortas (10), Annija Abolina (9), Aleksandra Popovic (7) and Brianna Harman (6) had 32 of the Lady Tigers' 40 kills. Marcella Compeau led the team in digs and got support from Abolina and Hanna Best with six apiece. Abolina had four service aces and Compeau two.

 

Campbellsville will continue its road swing when it travels Thursday, Sept. 11 for a 7 p.m. match at the University of the Cumberlands . The Lady Tigers will be at home at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 against Shawnee State. Both matches are Mid-South Conference.
