Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University's defense answered its first loss of the season with a 6-0 shutout win over Brescia University Tuesday night at Finley Stadium.
Dylon Speirs helped anchor the back line in his first CU start as the Tigers allowed only three shots from the Bearcats' starters, none of which were on target. Brescia picked up five shots off the bench in the second half including one on goal by Fernando Floriano for Josh Hollis' only save in his first career shutout win. It is Campbellsville's fourth shutout victory this season.
Offensively, Campbellsville averaged a goal every seven minutes in the first half. Marcelo Petit scored the opening goal unassisted in the 8th minute. Ryan Foster added a goal in the 14th minute off an assist from Gustav Carlsson. Petit later helped Alex Ryan in the 24th minute, and then Samuel Gonzalez assisted Guilherme Cheng in the 27th minute. Cheng led CU with two goals in the game, scoring again in the 40th minute off a double assist from Cesar Pena and Shane Buchanan. Cheng later added an assist in the 44th minute for Buchanan's first goal as a Tiger.
CU collected a total of 28 shots in the game compared to Brescia's eight. The Tigers also had 12 corner kicks.
Brescia played two keepers in goal with Conner Minnogue getting the start and collecting five saves in 79:45. Nathan Wayman had two saves in the final 10:15.
Campbellsville (5-1) will open Mid-South Conference play Thursday night at 8 p.m. EDT when it hosts Cumberland University at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field. The women will also host Cumberland at 6 p.m. The evening will begin with a student tailgate on Stapp Lawn at 5 p.m.Â
