Box Score WALESKA, Ga. — Campbellsville women's basketball is known for its depth and the Lady Tigers stayed true to their bread and butter today. Coach Ginger Colvin used 13 players Saturday afternoon to outlast a pesky Reinhardt University team, 59-46.
Daizah Kimberland led Campbellsville with 12 points, as she was the lone Lady Tiger in double figures. Macie Spence provided a spark off the bench with eight points and six rebounds.
"Macie was really good today," said Colvin. "She provided a spark we needed off the bench with the power post Reinhardt had in the paint. Macie has been practicing well and her play down the stretch can add another weapon for us on both sides of the ball."
Reinhardt took its second lead of the game, 38-37 with 10 minutes remaining, but the CU depth took over with the Lady Eagles starting to wear down.
Emily Fox lit a fire under the CU offense which struggled from 3-point range. The sophomore from McKinney, Ky. hit the lone CU triple deep behind the line to push LTB ahead 44-38.
Campbellsville finished 1-of-16 from behind the arc, but that doesn't worry Colvin.
"We had a little travel problems with traffic yesterday. A five-hour trip turned into about eight or nine hours. We didn't get our legs underneath us today but this was a good game to have before conference play starts back up Thursday," she said.
Campbellsville travels to No. 24 Georgetown College on Thursday, Jan. 22. The men's and women's double-header will start at 6 p.m. EST and you can follow the action live with Jay Turner and Matt Payton live on 88.7 The Tiger.
"It's a big conference game coming up for us," said Colvin. "Our conference is very tough with seven of the eight teams at least receiving votes in the Top 25. The Campbellsville-Georgetown rivalry has always been a war and we are expecting their best game on Thursday night. I hope we can get a big turnout from our fans because it's a big game to get us back into conference play."
The Lady Tigers finished the final 10 minutes on a 14-8 run that was boosted by made free throws down the stretch. Campbellsville shot 78 percent (14-of-18) from the charity stripe to make up for its 3-point shooting woes.
The deep CU team finished with 28 bench points, recorded 15 steals and turned Reinhardt over a season-high 26 times. Campbellsville's defense is ranked No. 1 in steals (253), No. 2 in scoring defense (50 ppg) and steals per game (13.5.)
"That is what we are known for," said Colvin. "We pride ourselves with defense and we create a lot of turnovers with our high-pressure schemes. When we are able to do that, our defense will lead to offense and fast-break points."
The Lady Tigers finished with 23 points off those 26 Reinhardt turnovers and scored 10 fast-break points.
Campbellsville was led in rebounding by Lindsey Burd. The junior from Hardyville, Ky. missed a double-double by one point and one rebound, after scoring nine points off the bench. Kristen Jacob led CU with four assists for a new career high.
In the first half, Campbellsville jumped to an 11-4 lead after Kimberland picked up back-to-back steals and went coast-to-coast for baskets.
Reinhardt would answer after calling a timeout and would go on its own run. The Lady Eagles went on an 11-2 run and took a 15-13 lead with 11:30 left in the first half.
The Lady Tigers did not falter and were able to outpace Reinhardt by playing 13 players compared to only eight for the Lady Eagles. Campbellsville bumped up its defensive pressure, stepping into the passing lane eight times in the first 20 minutes.
CU used its bench to retake the lead, 19-17 as Abby Miller hit a cutting Spence for a basket. The Lady Tigers picked up a steal and came back down with Fox being fouled. She knocked down both freebies and Madison Clements hit a step-back jumper to push CU ahead 23-17.
Campbellsville led 32-25 at half time.
