LEBANON, Tenn. —Lady Tiger soccer sealed the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Mid-South Conference tournament with a 2-0 win over Cumberland University this afternoon.
"It was a very good for us to finish the regular season with a win against a team we haven't beaten in years," said CU coach Thom Jones. "Being in second place just puts us in a good position for the tournament."
The Lady Tigers (16-1, 6-1 MSC) have broken multiple records in 2015 but the biggest of them all was moving into the Top 25 for the first time and eclisping last years mark of 15 wins. CU also added another individual record to the books with Mhairi Fyfe scoring her 25th goal of the season to break her own record which was set last season in the Lady Tigers run to the NCCAA National Tournament.
"To finish the season 16-1 and our only loss coming against the No. 1 team in Lindsey Wilson is a great accomplishment," said Jones. "Getting this 16th win and 12th shutout is so exciting. Now we are going to enjoy this win and get back to business on Monday."
The scoring came as early as you could draw it up in the second half. The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the half after Devon Burnside found Aris Kuntz who finished back post.
Just 12 minutes later, Fyfe put Campbellsville ahead 2-0. Rachel Veatch crossed a ball into the box and Fyfe kicked in a deflection for the new single-season record.
"Today's game came down to who wanted it more and it was great to see my team show a lot of heart and grit to go out and finish the game they way they did," said Jones.Â
Campbellsville has now outscored opponents 65-6 this season and is one goal away from tying the single-season scoring mark set last year with 66.
Amanda Howard finished with six saves and recorded her 10th shutout of the season. In just two seasons, Howard has accumulated 17 shutouts in 31 of the Lady Tiger wins. As a team, the Lady Tigers have recorded 12 shutouts - which is another program record.
Campbellsville has sealed the two-seed for the MSC tournament and will play either St. Catharine, Shawnee State or Pikeville. All three teams have conference games remaining this weekend.
The Mid-South Conference tournament is being hosted on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5-6 at Lovers Lane Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
