McKENZIE, Tenn. — Mhairi Fyfe continues to impress as the junior form Livingston, Scotland finished with a hat trick to lead Campbellsville women's soccer to the best regular season they've ever had - and there is still four games left. The 19th-ranked Lady Tigers defeated Bethel (Tenn.), 5-1, and moved their record to 13-0 which is the most wins in CU single-season history.
The Lady Tigers' 13-0 record still remains the best in the NAIA as they are the only team in the nation that remains undefeated. Bethel falls to 5-6 overall.
Fyfe opened the scoring in the sixth and 14th minutes off passes from senior Rachel Veatch to take an early 2-0 lead over the Wildcats.
"We came out and set the tone early by playing hard," said coach Thom Jones. "We played our game and when you do that it's more difficult for teams to play with us."
Campbellsville added on to its lead in the 34th minute with Morgan Danis finding the back of the net on a corner kick by Erica McWilliams.
Gill continued late in the second half with the Lady Tigers fourth goal. She picked up a loose ball in the box that was assisted by Danis and Rachel Mobley – the assists were the first for Danis and second for Mobley.
Although, the Lady Tigers were leading 4-0 going into halftime, Bethel had its chances. In the final seconds of the first half, the Wildcats had three scoring opportunities – two shots went high and another off the crossbar. In addition, CU's Amanda Howard stopped three Bethel shots in the first half.
The Lady Tigers dominated the second half when it comes to ball possession but was only able to capitalize once. Fyfe secured the hat trick and the 20th goal of the season in the 60th minute. The goal adds on to her record of career goals which now sits at 58.
Bethel recorded only four shots in the second period but Howard stopped all four to finish the night with seven saves. Howard now has 58 saves on the season and eight shutouts.
"It was a game where everyone contributed," said Jones. "We played like we were the 19th-ranked team in the nation today."
Campbellsville has outscored opponents 55-5 this season. Gill now is third on the team in scoring with nine goals. Rachel Veatch is second behind Fyfe with 11. All three Lady Tigers sit 1-2-3 in the MSC in scoring.Â
