INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Fighting Tiger football could not overcome the weather and a powerful Marian University offense, falling in the NAIA Football Championship Series, 44-7 on Saturday afternoon.
BOX SCORE
The Tigers (8-3, 5-0 MSC), who came into the NAIA Playoffs as the top-ranked passing team in the country was held to its lowest production all season. Jacob Russell finished his career throwing for 150 yards on 13-of-36 attempts and zero touchdowns. He was also intercepted early in the fourth quarter.
Campbellsville was also unable to get anything going on the ground, rushing for only 25 yards on 17 attempts. Tyus Alcorn led the Tiger receiving core with 79 yards on four catches. It was only the second game all season Alcorn did not catch at least one TD. He ends the year with 19 touchdowns.
Marian on the other hand was used to the wintry mix that hit Indianapolis just one hour before kickoff. The Knights finished with a total of 456 yards with 312 coming through the air and 144 on the ground.
Hayden Northern hit 20-of-35 attempts and threw for the lone passing touchdown in the game. Krishawn Hogan, who has been a threat for the Knights all season at the wide receiver position, was put into the Wildcat formation deep in the red zone and rushed for three touchdowns.
The Knights took an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter after Matt Plesac kicked a career-high 33-yard field goal and Hogan ran in for his first touchdown. The TD by Hogan was set up by the Tigers' first turnover on a fumble on fourth down by punter Erik Krivitsky inside the CU 20-yard line.
Plesac would kick two more field goals – one from 33-yards and the other from 23 to put Marian ahead, 16-0 with 14:01 left in the second quarter.
It was déjà vu for the Tigers in the second quarter. Marquis Cain intercepted a Northern pass and returned it 45-yards for his second pick-six of the season. Cain ties coach Dwight Houston (2008-11) for two interceptions in a single-season and also career. The first pick-six of the season came against then-No. 3 Faulkner to spark a comeback against the Eagles.
Campbellsville seemed to steal a little momentum and cut the lead to 16-7 but Marian answered with four straight touchdowns in as many possessions. The Knights marched down the field with three minutes remaining in the first half and Hogan scored his second rushing touchdown from five yards out.
Marian led 23-7 at halftime but came right out in the second half to score three more times to put the game away. The snow stopped significantly in the second half but Campbellsville could not get its offense rolling.
James Gardner, Percy Minor and Elmer Barron all led Campbellsville with eight tackles. Narvin Powell led the Knights with nine.
