Tigers lose heartbreaker in PKs to Davenport

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — It took more than 110 minutes to decide a winner in Campbellsville's first NAIA National Tournament appearance but the Tigers came up just short. Reigning NAIA National Champion Davenport University outlasted the Tigers in regulation and two overtime periods to advance on penalty kicks, 5-4.

With the Tigers and Panthers knotted at two goals apiece, Campbellsville's Marcelo Petit, Guilherme Fanck and Yona Lobulu set the tone with three straight PKs. Then CU goalkeeper Gonzalo Sapena gave the Tigers the advantage, 3-2, after stopping Joan Nievas' attempt.

Alex Ryan was the fourth Tiger in line and capitalized, while Davenport's Kevin Lacroix did so as well. Tied 4-4, Ross Lindsay had a chance to propel the Tigers to victory but goalkeeper Aaron Orban made a diving save to force sudden death PKs.

Craig McBride drilled the opening shot past Sapena but then Alex Higdon's shot was saved by Orban for Davenport (16-2-3) to advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament.

The Tigers end their season with an 18-2-2 record.

Campbellsville got on the scoreboard first in the opening half, as junior Ross Lindsay scored off an assist from senior Chris Moyo in the 13th minute.

Davenport answered in the 28th, as Cam Cavanagh found Jake Love who then shot near post to knot the game 1-1.

The Panthers took the advantage in the 64th minute, as Cavangh found Alex Mendez to give Davenport a 2-1 lead.

But the Tigers rallied late. Jose Campuzano, who was playing in his second straight game after missing the end of the regular season and Mid-South Conference Tournament with an injury, played a beautiful corner kick into the box to find Daniel Nimmo there for the header.

Petit and Ryan both had chances in the final 35 seconds to win it for CU in regulation but were unable to find the back of the net. Petit's shot was saved by the fingertips of Orban and Ryan had two chances but missed both – one hitting the crossbar and the other went high.

The Tigers end their season after winning their first MSC Regular Season title and appearing in their first NAIA National Tournament.
