Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville was able to overcome its worst shooting performance of the season and avenged its only loss by outlasting Lindsey Wilson College, 62-54, tonight in the Powell Athletic Center.
BOX SCORE
Campbellsville turned Lindsey Wilson over 21 times and took care of the ball itself, only losing the ball 13 times — just twice in the second half. The Lady Tigers also picked up 18 offensive rebounds en route to victory.
"It was a big win for us," said coach Ginger Colvin.
Lindsey Wilson actually outshot the Lady Tigers 38 percent (20-of-52) to 33 percent (19-of-61) but Campbellsville hit two more 3s and eight more free throws to seal the win.
Emily Fox tied the Lady Tigers' biggest lead at that point, 50-44 with her fourth 3-pointer at the 6:45 mark. The sophomore from McKinney, Ky. led CU in scoring for the first time in her short CU career and was able to do so by knocking down jumpers at crucial times.
"Emily has been a huge addition for our team," said Colvin. "She has taken big shots and has hit them when we needed them the most. Being able to bring her off the bench late in the season will be a major plus for us."
LeeAnn Grider also was a main cog in the Lady Tiger lineup. With 4:47 left, Grider penetrated inside the LWC zone defense and was able to draw a foul. After hitting both free throws, the Lady Tigers jumped to their biggest lead of the game at that point, 52-45.
Grider filled the stat sheet with 12 points, six assists and 6-for-8 from the free throw line but her ability to take care of the ball was the most important.
"LeeAnn was great for us tonight," said Colvin. "With her ability to stay composed and get us in our offense makes a big difference that the average fan may not see."
Lindsey Wilson was in foul trouble the entire game, and leading scorer, Chanel Roberts, fouled out finishing with 13 points, two assists and 10 turnovers. Billie Hearn also fouled out for Lindsey Wilson and finished with six points and three rebounds.
The Lady Tigers held the Blue Raiders' top three scorers, Roberts, Kayla Richardson and Bre Elder to a combined 23 points.
Campbellsville turned the game around with Fox's long-range shots. Leading scorer coming into the ball game, Caroline Owen, made the biggest play of the night for CU and it didn't involve scoring. Owen drove to the basket and used a sweet no-look pass to Lindsey Burd, who finished with a layup, pushing CU ahead 60-52.
The final 53.7 seconds saw Lindsey Wilson scrambling to foul, but eventually ran out of time.
Campbellsville attempted just four free throws in the first half but finished hitting 18-of-28 (64.3 percent) overall for the game. Lindsey Wilson got to the line 16 times and hit 10.
The first half was a slow start for both teams until the Lady Tigers were able to force three of the Blue Raiders' 15 turnovers and all three were converted for long-range points – two by Fox and one by Lexxus Graham.
Campbellsville shot just 26 percent in the first period (9-of-34) and 25 percent from behind the 3-point line (4-of-16). But Lindsey Wilson could not take advantage, shooting just 33 percent overall and from behind the 3-point arc (9-of-27 overall and 2-of-6 from 3).
Behind Fox's 13 and Grider's 12, Chelsea Craig and Lindsey Burd both finished with 10 points. Craig was tied with the team lead in rebounds with seven. Graham finished with eight points off the bench.
"Lexxus Graham was also huge for us," said Colvin. "We can't forget about her coming in in the first half and hitting two big 3s when we were struggling to find a basket."
Campbellsville will be home on Saturday, Feb. 7 looking to push its home record to a perfect 10-0 against Cumberland University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST at Powell Athletic Center. Listen to the game live on 88.7 The Tiger and watch live on Comcast Channel 10 in the Campbellsville area.
