Tiger golf kicks rust off at SEKI Invitational

LONDON, Ky. — (RESULTS) Campbellsville men's golf kicked off the rust this week in its first spring tournament. The Tigers finished in fifth place at the SEKI Invitational hosted at Crooked Creek Golf Club.

James Higgins lead the way for the Tigers firing, 76-78-80 (234) in his three rounds to finish in 17th place. Michael Newton, who played as the No. 5 golfer to start the spring, fired, 77-82-82 (241) to finish in 25th place.

"This was a very tough tournament," said CU head coach Kenny Lawson. "Due to the weather lately there hasn't been much practice time on the course. But the guys battled through the tournament with sore and tired legs and competed."

Cardinal Stritch University (WI.) led all eight teams in the field, finishing with a team total of 893. The Wolves' Justin Doeden (71-72-74) finished low-medalist and Mario Funcic was two strokes behind (73-70-76) to finish atop the leaderboard for the Wolves.

Union College (894), University of the Cumberlands A-team (909), University of the Cumberlands B-team (912) all finished ahead of the Tigers fifth place spot (976).

"Overall the team had some ups and downs," said Lawson. "I expected that but none of them gave up and they competed down to the last hole. I also thought the team played well on day one of the tournament, having to play 36-straight holes."

Campbellsville's Dalton Olson stayed consistent on the week, shooting 82-83-82 (247) to finish in 29th place. Justin Hazel fired a low score, 78, in the final round but shot, 88-88 (254), in the first two rounds to finish 33rd. Michael Razor completed his three round tournament in 40th place, with scores of 94-91-89 (274).

The Tigers will now travel to Stonecrest Golf Club in Prestonsburg, Ky. for the Mid-South Conference spring tournament on Monday and Tuesday, March 30-31. The three Mid-South Conference tournaments (fall, spring and MSC championship) are all taken into consideration for All-Conference teams and other conference awards.

The Tigers finished in seventh place in the MSC Fall Tournament.

The MSC Championships are being hosted at Maywood Country Club in Bardstown, Ky. on April 19-21.
