Newton finishes second at MSC Spring Tournament

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — (RESULTS) Campbellsville men's golf stayed the course in the final round of the Mid-South Conference Spring Tournament. The Tigers finished in fifth place after firing a total score of 629 (313-316) for the two-day total.

"We played pretty well considering the circumstances," said CU head coach Kenny Lawson. "The wind was howling around 30 mph and it made a tough course a lot tougher."

The lone bright spot for Campbellsville in the final round came from senior Michael Newton. Newton improved his first-round score of 76 and carded an even-par 72. His 72 was good for low-round in the field, finishing three strokes behind Pikeville's Will Boyd for the two-day medalist honor.

Boyd won the tournament firing 70-75 (145) to finish just one-over par.

"I am very proud of Michael," said Lawson. "He played well and did not let the wind gusts affect his game. He picked up a few birdies late to hold on to that low round for the day."

University of the Cumberlands held on to win a nail-bitter down the stretch. The Patriots shot a total of 609 to outlast Lindsey Wilson College's 610. Host University of Pikeville also finished very close, just two strokes behind the Patriots with a final score of 611.

Cumberland University finished just ahead of Campbellsville in fourth place with a score of 623.

The Tigers' Dalton Olson fell back a few spots after his three-over 75 in round one. The senior from Mason City, Iowa finished tied for 14th with a final round score of 80.

James Higgins also shot in the 70s with Newton. He finished tied for 21st place with two scores of 79-78 (157). Cody Goodwin finished in 45th place shooting 83-88 (171) and Justin Hazel shot 88-86 (174) to round out the Tigers top five.

Campbellsville will now have two weeks to prepare for the Cumberland University Bulldog Invitational. CU will travel to Mt. Juliet, Tenn. and Windtree Golf Course on April 13-14 for its final tournament before the MSC Championships on April 19-21.
