"Shawnee State is a great team," said CU head coach Ginger Colvin. "We did everything down the stretch that we wanted to do but they made shots when it mattered the most. Coming in we wanted to use our depth to get them tired and take over late but they kept making plays. Congratulations to Shawnee State and the great season they are having."
Campbellsville will now await the NAIA Women's Basketball Selection Show on Wednesday, March 11 to see what bracket they will be in for the NAIA National Tournament in Independence, Mo.
Shawnee State erased a first-half 14-point lead for Campbellsville and the Lady Tigers shot 30 percent (10-of-33) in the second half and overtime allowing the Bears to make the come back.
Burd battled through foul trouble all day and tied a career-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting overall. The junior from Hardyville, Ky. also was perfect from the free throw line, making all six shots and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double this season.
Madison Clements, who had the hot hand all tournament, lit a spark under the Lady Tigers in the early going scoring 12 first half points. She finished with 20 points for her second 20-point performance in three MSC tournament games.
"These two (Burd and Clements) has been great all year," said Colvin. "Burd has been a major factor in our success and I have said it before that Madison is one of the best shooters on the team. She got hot in the tournament and played very well."
In the first half, Campbellsville hit seven of its first 13 shots and took an early 22-8 lead with 11:39 on the clock. But Allie Zieverink started to prove why she is the MSC Player of the Year and kick-started an 8-0 run for the Bears, scoring eight points in the final six minutes, to whittle the lead to 32-30. Campbellsville extended its lead with four points in the final 12 seconds of the first half and took a 36-30 lead at the intermission.
McMurtrey, Zieverink and Robinson were the only three Bears to score in the first half for Shawnee.
The rest of the game saw no more than a six-point lead for Campbellsville, 45-39, after Caroline Owen swished her third 3-pointer.
The Bears worked the lead down to two again, 54-52 at the final media timeout but Owen knocked down her final 3 to push CU ahead 57-52. Owen finished hitting 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and ended her final MSC tournament game with 12 points.
Shawnee State went on a 7-2 run and knotted the game at 59 with Abby Feucher's first triple with 1:45 remaining on the clock. It was the first time the game was tied since it was 4-4 in the early stages.
Both teams traded baskets in the final minute and Campbellsville had a chance with 20 seconds left in regulation but Shawnee did not allow a good look by Owen.
