Parrott, Scantland lead CU at Bill Sergent

LONDON, Ky. — Lady Tiger golf could not overcome a bumpy start to the 2015 season opener and sit in fourth place out of six teams at the Bill Sergent Invitational at Crooked Creek Golf Community.

The Lady Tigers had three golfers finish in the 70s with juniors Cassidy Scantland and Olivia Parrott leading the way. The duo from Greensburg, Ky. finished with four-over par 77s and are tied for 12th.

Scantland, who is the only Lady Tiger in history to reach the NAIA National Tournament twice, started slowly in her first round of the year. She went four-over par through her first six holes but took advantage of her length off the tee and birdied both par fives, Nos. 8 and 9, to post a two-over, 39 on the front. She held her round together – going bogey-birdie on Nos. 13 and 14 but double bogeyed No. 17 to fall back to a tie for 12th.

Parrott shot an even-par 37 on the front but double bogeyed No. 10 and had two more bogeys in her final four holes to fall to a 77.

Freshman Michaela Jarman was the other Lady Tiger to keep her first round in the 70s with a six-over 79. Jarman struggled in her opening nine, going three-over but put together a nice back nine before going three-over on her final four holes.

Juniors Anna-Marie Hyatt and Ashley Goodin sit in a tie for 20th after firing first round 81s. Hyatt also rallied in her back nine. After going seven-over through nine holes, she came back with a one-over back nine to keep a respectable round.

Freshman Kylie Withrow was the lone Lady Tiger playing as an individual, finishing with a 10-over, 83.

Campbellsville sits in striking distance, finishing with a first round of 314 – sitting one shot behind Lindsey Wilson College (313) for third place. The Lady Tigers trail second place Cumberland University (308) by six stokes and the leaders University of the Cumberlands (301) by 13 strokes.

Union College (336) sits in fifth place and Midway (344) is sixth.

"In qualifying we have been averaging aground 313," said CU coach Kim Goodin. "So to shoot a 314 in the first round of the year is good. I cannot complain. We are just going to take it day by day and get in the groove of things."

Kaitlyn Riley (U. of Cumberlands) leads the individual side of the tournament as the only golfer to record a sub-par round. Riley, a sophomore from Lawrenceburg, Ky. finished with a four-under 69 to lead by one stroke over Cristina Jimenz of Lindsey Wilson College.

Due to dense fog being predicted in the morning, the tournament will start at 10 a.m. ET tomorrow morning at Crooked Creek Golf Community.
