Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gill scores two goals in emotional return and CU wins 4-0

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — On an emotional night for Campbellsville women's soccer, coach Thom Jones and his Lady Tigers were able to set aside the struggles of everyday life and just play the game they love.

Campbellsville (10-0, 3-0 MSC) defeated Faulkner (Ala.) 4-0 Thursday night in front of a packed house at Finley Stadium.

Junior captain Chelsea Gill led the charge with two goals and an assist after missing her first game in over two years on Tuesday. A good friend of Gill's lost her life in an automobile accident over the weekend. The team dedicated the game to Chelsea's friend, Miranda Greer.

"It meant so much to be able to get back on the field and battle with my teammates," said Gill in her postgame interview. "I knew this would be an emotional game for me but the girls have had my back all week off the field and knew they would be there to pick me up on the field as well. They all have showered love over me this week by sending me countless encouraging text messages and by calling. It was great to see the entire team make the trip to Miranda's visitation."

Gill started the scoring in the 11th minute after receiving a pass from Kathryn Thomas on a corner kick. It was exactly the start Gill needed after an emotional few days.

"It's great to see Chelsea be able to come back and get us going," said Jones. "We missed her on Tuesday and it really showed but for her to come back after an emotional week and score that early in the game was awesome. It shows how this team is a family on and off the field. By having her back it shows how much this team loves Chelsea and how important she is to our team. It's not about me it's about we and it's great to see that as a coach."

Even though Campbellsville dominated the first half and did not allow the Eagles (3-2-1, 0-0 SSAC) to record a shot, CU still left some opportunities on the field. The Lady Tigers had 11 shots of their own with four on goal.

Rachel Veatch, the reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week, started the second half with a roar and put the Lady Tigers ahead 2-0 in the 47th minute off a pass from Mhairi Fyfe.

Gill kept that pace up just four minutes later in the 51st minute and scored on another corner kick from Thomas. It was Thomas' second assist of the night and fifth of the season.

Tonight's two scores were Gill's sixth and seventh goals of the season and she now sits one goal behind teammate Veatch for second on the team and also inside the Mid-South Conference.

"I think some of the girls were more excited to see me score the goals tonight for Miranda than I was," said Gill.  "I've never been a part of something so special and I truly feel blessed to be a part of this program."

Campbellsville kept the pedal to the floor and Fyfe scored the 51st goal of her career in the 64th minute. She used a pass from senior Aris Kuntz to give Campbellsville its seventh win of the season by at least four goals.

The Lady Tigers have now outscored their opponents 41-3 this season. Tonight the Lady Tigers finished with 24 shots and 12 on goal. Faulkner recorded only four shots with one on goal — a save by goalkeeper Amanda Howard.

Campbellsville returns to action on Monday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. to host Oakland City University in a double header with the men's program. The game can be watched live on the CU Sports Network – HERE.
