Veatch, Fyfe lead Lady Tigers past Oakland City

CAMPBELLSVILE, Ky. — Lady Tiger soccer continued its dominance on the pitch Monday night and downed non-conference foe Oakland City University, 6-1.

Campbellsville put the game out of reach early in the first half with three goals in 24 minutes. Rachel Veatch scored the first of her three goals in the 5th minute and Mhairi Fyfe put the Lady Tigers ahead 2-0 in the 22nd  — assist to Veatch.

Just two minutes later Fyfe scored her second goal and the 53rd of her career on a penalty kick after being fouled inside the 18-yard box.

With the second goal for Fyfe, she ties Jessica Ralph with the most in Lady Tiger history.

"When the record is broken it will be great," said head coach Thom Jones. "But we cannot think about that and just play soccer. I really hope it can be at home in front of our crowd."

Campbellsville went into halftime leading 3-0 and recorded 11 shots — 10 on goal. Oakland City had three shots and two on goal but Amanda Howard stopped both.

In the second half, Campbellsville dominated for 44 minutes. The Lady Tigers came into the match outscoring opponents 51-3 and were looking for their ninth shutout.

Veatch scored in the 65th minute off a pass from Devon Burnside to put CUWS ahead, 4-0. Fellow senior Aris Kuntz added on to the Lady Tigers lead off a pass from Fyfe, 5-0.

Veatch recorded her second hat trick in as many weeks with a goal via penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Fyfe and Veatch are both one-two inside the Mid-South Conference in goals scored. Fyfe leads the MSC with 13 and Veatch now has 11. Fyfe ranks No. 4 in the NAIA and Veatch ranks No. 9.

Campbellsville was unable to seal its ninth shutout and allowed a late goal in the 89th minute by OCU's Christina Haag.

"It's all mental," said Jones. "The girls took a break at the end and allowed them to score. It did not hurt us tonight but we have to correct that so it doesn't come back to bite us later in the season. We have to play 90 minutes each game no matter the competition. We have a target on our back now and we cannot go through the motions."

The Lady Tigers will take five days off before returning to action at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field against University of Pikeville on Saturday, Oct. 3. Fans catch watch the game live on the CU Sports Network starting at 6 p.m. – HERE.
