CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville women's soccer pushed head coach Thom Jones over the century mark with a 7-0 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday night. The win is the 100th for Jones during his nine years at CU.
Campbellsville (5-0) controlled possession all 90 minutes only allowing four shots from the Crimson Wave. Calumet had only two of those on goal and CU goalkeeper Amanda Howard recorded both saves.
Howard and the CU defense have allowed only one goal all season with that coming in the previous game against Marian University. The Lady Tigers have outscored their opponents 19-1 in the first five contests.
For the second straight game, Campbellsville recorded over 40 shots with 24 of those on goal.
The scoring started early for CU as Rachel Veatch scored her first goal of the night. The senior from Bowling Green, Ky. received a cross from Devon Burnside and put the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute.
Campbellsville kept the pedal to the floor but was unable to connect again until Jade Perry recorded her first career goal. The junior from Dawsonville, Ga. picked up a deflected pass from Aris Kuntz and pushed CU ahead, 2-0 in the 35th minute.
Junior Mhairi Fyfe opened the second half with her 45th career goal. Taylor Pence delivered a long pass over top of the defense and Fyfe outran her counterpart to finish in the right corner putting CU ahead, 3-0. Fyfe is only eight goals shy of breaking the Lady Tiger all-time record of 53.
That's when the flood gates opened for CU. Veatch scored for the second time in the 69th minute and just 30 seconds later Carson Cline pushed the Lady Tigers ahead 5-0.
Nine minutes later Kathryn Thomas scored her second goal of the season, 6-0, and just 43 seconds after that Aris Kuntz put the exclamation point with her first goal of the season, 7-0.
The 5-0 start for CU is the best in program history. Campbellsville will host University of the Cumberlands for its first Mid-South Conference game of 2015. The doubleheader with the men's team starts at 6 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the game live – www.portal.stretchinternet.com/camp/
