Tyler's 10 triples and Harris' leadership leads CU past Life

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Hagen Tyler and Sekou Harris put Campbellsville men's basketball on their backs tonight and the duo scored 62 of the Tiger points en route to the 26th-straight home victory, 99-93 over Life University.

Tyler did not disappoint in the Tigers (15-4, 2-3 MSC) home opener after Christmas break. After only scoring 18 points in Campbellsville's first two games in the new semester, he put the shooting woes behind him and finished with 33 points - one shy of tying his career-high.

Tyler led Campbellsville by knocking down 10 3-point baskets – which ranks him third on the all-time list for made 3-pointers in a game - moving Benji Kelly's nine triples against Pikeville in 1992 to No. 4. Korey Mitchell's 14 3-pointers on Nov. 12, 2005 against Cincinnati Christian sits atop the list.

Harris was not far behind, making up for the other 29 points. He finished hitting 9-of-17 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. He also dished out seven assists with four of those coming off Tyler trifectas.

"Sekou did a great job in finding Hagen tonight," said CU coach Keith Adkins. "After Hagen made the first 3-pointer in the first half, Sekou came over in a timeout and said lets run this play to get him the ball. We did and Hagen drilled another 3. That's our combo guard coming into a timeout, taking control, being a leader and showing some faith in a freshman.

"This was a great win because Life is an extremely difficult team to defend. Life has a lot of gifted players that are long and athletic. But still with that said we have to get better in a lot of areas. We turned the ball over 15 times and gave up 17 offensive rebounds. That is how Life dictates the game but we have to be better."

Life University (7-5, 2-3 MSC) jumped out to its biggest lead, 30-17, but then it became the Hagen Tyler show. The freshman from Boyle County scored 20 points in the final 8:39 of the first half to bring the Tigers back within two, 49-47 at halftime.

The big killer for Campbellsville in the first stanza came via Dalarian Williams. Williams was playing his first game after fracturing his hand against Pikeville in November and scored 14 first half points on 7-of-10 shooting. He finished with 25 to lead the Running Eagles.

The Tigers were also getting out-rebounded at the half, 25-17.

The second half, though, was a knock-down drag-out. Each team traded blows like prized fighters dueling back and fourth for the heavyweight title. There were nine ties and six lead changes in the final 17 minutes.

The Tigers gained their first lead since the score was 4-2 at the 17:25 mark in the second half. Shawn Johnson knocked down his only field goal of the night – a 3 from the left wing – pushing CU ahead 56-54. But then the Tigers did not score another field goal for the next five possessions and turned the ball over three times in that span to allow Life to regain the lead, 59-58.

Allen Dantzler – who was playing his first game of the season due to eligibility rules – sparked Life with 10 minutes to play. He picked up an offensive rebound and converted with an and-one opportunity. After finishing the old fashioned 3-point play, Dantzler gave the Running Eagles another lead, 73-72.

Williams gave Life its final lead, 75-74, with 9:13 to play but Campbellsville went on a 19-10 run to take its largest margin of 10 points, 94-84 with 2:22 left. The run was capped by Harris' lone triple of the night and brought the Tiger faithful to its feet. Harris finished scoring 11 of Campbellsville's final 22 points.

"Sekou was really good and at a time when we really needed him he showed some leadership," said Adkins. "Life plays a defense where you aren't going to be able make a lot of passes and they switch on every screen and that makes it hard for you to run your offense. So as a team you have to go play basketball and make plays and I think Sekou did a very good job of that in the second half."

The Tigers knocked down 5-of-8 free throws in the final 41 seconds to hold off a late push and earn their second conference victory.

Life University out-manned Campbellsville on the boards 45-33 but the Tigers finished hitting 50 percent from behind the arc (13-of-26) and holding the Running Eagles to a 30 percent (6-of-20) clip.

Campbellsville returns home on Thursday, Jan. 14 to host University of the Cumberlands (11-5, 2-1 MSC). The men's and women's doubleheader will start at 6 p.m. ET with the Lady Tigers and Patriots. Fans can watch the game live on the CU Sports Network and listen on 88.7 The Tiger.
