LEBANON, Tenn. —Cumberland University scored four goals in a span of 14 minutes in the second half to down Campbellsville women's soccer, 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The 12
th-ranked Phoenix improve to 10-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-South Conference, while the Lady Tigers fall to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Starting in the 58
th minute,
Amanda Howard made a diving stop off an Emily Shires shot but Cumberland's Mariah Aplin was in the right place at the right time to pick up the rebound and capitalize with the only goal the Phoenix would need. Then almost 10 minutes later, Alpin dribbled down the middle of the field before finding Rebecca Holloway who finished far post giving Cumberland a 2-0 lead.
The scoring then came in bunches as the Phoenix scored three times in a span of four minutes. Aplin netted her second goal of the day – third of the season – off a Shires cross to the back post in the 70
th minute.
Then Shires got in on the scoring as Maria Brenes found her teammate at the top of the box who finished with her 13
th goal of the season in the 72
nd minute.
Howard had a busy day in goal as Cumberland dominated the overall possession. The Phoenix finished with 16 shots – seven on goal – and Howard saved three.
For the second time this season, the Lady Tigers failed to record a shot on goal and had three total shots on the day.
With the win, Cumberland now has a one game lead over Georgetown (4-0) and two game lead over Lindsey Wilson (3-0) in the MSC standings. The Lady Tigers are one of three teams – University of Pikeville and life University - still seeking their first conference win of the season.
