Dog fight between Lady Tigers and Cumberlands ends in 0-0 draw

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Lady Tiger soccer and University of the Cumberlands traded blows throughout 90 minutes of regulation and another 20 minutes in overtime periods but ended in a nil-nil draw Friday night.

Campbellsville finishes the regular season with a 10-6-1 record and 2-4-1 inside Mid-South Conference play. The Lady Tigers will now be the sixth seed in the upcoming conference tournament hosted at Warren East High School in Bowling Green, Ky. starting on Thursday, Nov. 3.

CU will either play Cumberland University or Georgetown College, who are playing for the three-seed Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.

Tonight, though, it was a dog fight between Campbellsville and Cumberlands for 110 minutes. In the early stages, the Patriots had three opportunities to find the back of the next but CU's defense was playing a little game of cat and mouse picking up a trio of offside calls.

Late in the first half, Cumberlands had another scoring chance but junior All-American goalkeeper Amanda Howard made an aggressive play on the ball outside the 18-yard box to keep UC scoreless.

Going into halftime, the Lady Tigers had the lone shot on goal with three shots a piece for both teams.

To start the second half, the tides started to turn as Cumberlands finished with 12 shots and five on goal, while Campbellsville had only four shots (one on goal) in the final 65 minutes.

UC's Dakota Gadd had the most opportunities (seven) but her shots in the 52nd, 53rd, 60th and 79th all went into the sticky hands of Howard.

CU had a great chance to net the first goal in the 64th minute, as Rachel McWilliams' corner kick found the foot of fellow freshman Lakin Walls but her chip shot sailed high.

Just before the end of regulation, Howard made another spectacular diving save as Jody LeMaster attempted to head in a corner kick but was denied in the 81st minute.

In the first overtime period, Cumberlands looked to strike first but Gadd's shot sailed high. The final opportunity for the Patriots came in the 108th minute but Howard erased a LeMaster attempt.

The Lady Tigers had a few opportunities late but the biggest of them all came in the 109th minute. Walls had a shot carom off the crossbar but that was the final threat of the night.

Cumberlands has sealed the fourth or fifth seed after finishing the regular season with a 9-8-1 record and 3-3-1 inside conference play. UC or Shawnee State will be the Nos. 4 or 5 seeds and will play each other in the opening round of the conference tournament next week.

More information for the conference tournament will be released next week with seeds, pairings and game times.
