Cold shooting day dooms Tigers on the road at Harris-Stowe

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — No. 11 Tiger basketball went into a hostile environment over the weekend and could not overcome poor shooting, falling to Harris-Stowe State College, 71-68.

Down 69-68, the Tigers had a chance to take a late lead with 12 seconds left but Hagen Tyler's contested layup rolled all the way around the rim and Shawn Johnson was unable to capitalize on the tip.

Harris-Stowe's Tyrone Alston rebounded, was fouled, and he knocked down two free throws giving the Hornets a three-point lead. After a timeout by CU, Jalen Coates missed a long 3 with time expiring for the upset Hornets win.

Campbellsville finished shooting just 33.3 percent (21-of-63) on the day and 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from deep. The Tigers also left points at the free throw line hitting just 58.3 percent (21-of-36).

Harris-Stowe took advantage at the free throw line hitting 17-of-21 (81 percent) and 26-of-65 from the floor (40 percent).

The Tigers got down by as large as five points in the first half (twice) but ended up holding the Hornets scoreless in the final three minutes to take a 32-30 halftime lead.

The second half was a battle until the final buzzer. Byron Dean, starting in place of Kelton Ford who broke his jaw in the season opener, came out firing in the second half. Dean scored eight-straight points – hitting a layup and a pair of 3s – pushing CU out to its largest lead of nine points, 43-34, with 15:45 left.

Campbellsville held that nine-point advantage until the Hornets started to slowly chip away and the Tigers went cold from the floor. Harris-Stowe would then out-score the Tigers 24-15 and tie the game for the seventh time at 62-all.

During the big run, CU did not score a bucket from the 14:07 mark until Andre Applewhite hit a layup off a Harris-Stowe turnover with 8:43 left. Also in the final 14:07, CU finished hitting just 5-of-19 from the floor in the final 14:07 and turned the ball over six times.

Dean led the Tigers with a career-high 16 points on 5-of- 9 shooting and hitting 2-of-3 from downtown. Johnson and Hagen Tyler also added double-figure scoring nights with 13 and 12 points, respectively. In addition, Johnson led CU on the boards grabbing 12 for a double-double. Coates narrowly missed a double-double for CU, finishing with seven points and nine assists.

Jalen Fletcher led the Hornets with 23 points, while Malik Wineglass had 20.

Campbellsville will now play an exhibition game at Western Kentucky University on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. The Hilltoppers are coached by former CU alum Rick Stansbury. Radio coverage for CU will start at 7:45 p.m. on 88.7 The Tiger and wlcufm.com.
