CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Trailing by two points, 51-49, with 10:06 remaining, Campbellsville men's basketball finished on a 29-15 run and earned revenge after an early-season loss to Harris-Stowe State, 77-66.
In the decisive run,
Hagen Tyler and
Elliott Young both sparked the Tigers by knocking down a combined three 3-pointers and scored 15 points. The Tigers would end up going on a 16-4 run to take a 64-55 lead with 5:14 left and with 36 seconds left, Campbellsville (5-1) would end up pushing its lead to double-figures for the first time.
Young led the Tigers with 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and also dished out four assists. Fellow senior
Erik Kinney was a force in the paint scoring 20 points and brought the crowd to its feet four separate times with high-flying dunks.
Tyler paced the Tigers with five 3-pointers – three of them in the second half to score 17 points. Junior
Jalen Coates was terrific running the point for CU, dishing out nine assists and only recording one turnover.
Harris-Stowe (2-2) came out hot and the Tigers were ice cold to start the final game of the Lou Cunningham Classic. The Hornets took an 11-0 lead before Kinney scored CU's first basket with 13:37 left in the first half. But then Campbellsville rallied.
Antonio Chapman drilled a 3, was followed by the first of three triples for Young and Kinney brought the house down with an and-one alley-oop dunk for a quick 9-0 run.
Tyler ended up giving Campbellsville its first lead with his first 3 of the afternoon, 16-15. But the Tigers struggled overall in the first half hitting just 26 percent (13-of-34), while Harris-Stowe lit it up by hitting 67 percent (16-of-24). The Tigers were also 5-of-19 from the 3-point line in the first half.
But after taking a 37-35 halftime lead, Campbellsville was able to start hot in the second period with a 9-2 run. CU pushed its lead out to nine, which was the largest at that point (46-37) but Harris-Stowe answered quickly. The Hornets would counter with a 14-0 run and take a brief lead, 50-46.
Tyler drilled a 3 with 10:48 left and then knocked down another just 2:13 later to give Campbellsville a lead it would not surrender in the final 8:35.
Campbellsville will now participate in the First Annual Mid-South Conference/Southern States Athletics Conference Challenge next week, Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 17-19. CU will play Bethel University on Thursday at 3 3 p.m. ET. Fans can follow along on the CU Sports Network 88.7 The Tiger.
