PULASKI, Tenn. — Campbellsville finished the Mid-South Conference/Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge with a 1-2 record, as the Tigers fell to host Martin Methodist on Saturday, 67-62.
Campbellsville (5-3) saw double-digit scoring from Rod Lawrence (15) and
Jalen Coates (13), as
Erik Kinney grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds in the loss. Martin Methodist was led by Will Smith's 16 points off the bench, while Caleb Chowbay finished with 13 and Albert Lynch had 12.
The Tigers were able to take an early lead of nine points (twice) in the first half.
Antonio Chapman drilled a 3 with 6:12 left in the opening frame to put CU ahead, 21-12, and
Shawn Johnson made the game 23-14 with a jumper but Martin Methodist would rally.
The RedHawks went on an 8-0 run cutting the lead to one, 23-22, as the Tigers went frigid cold for three-plus minutes. Coates ended the spell with a layup at the 2:05 mark and another jumper with 55 seconds left in the half to keep Campbellsville ahead at the break, 27-26.
The RedHawks were 0-of-8 from the 3-point line in the opening half but but was able to control the paint for most of the night, scoring 24 of their 26 first-half points in the 15-foot arc.
Campbellsville held on to the advantage in the second half for the first six minutes but Martin Methodist rallied once again going on another 8-0 run to take a 51-36 lead. But CU fought right back, as Kinney scored two of his eight points with 11:12 remaining to give the Tigers a 42-41 lead.
But it was LaMarcus Mosley picking the pocket of Kinney on the next CU possession and finding Broderick Davis for a basket to give the RedHawks the lead for good with 10:05 left.
Martin Methodist ended up pushing its lead to as big as eight points two separate times in the final 3:30.
Campbellsville gave it a valiant effort late, as
Hagen Tyler and Lawrence both nailed 3s in the final 20 seconds, but with three ticks left, Albert Lynch found Connor Peach for a basket to put MMC back ahead by five and pull the upset.
The RedHawks finished with 42 of their 67 points in the paint going 27-of-67 from the floor (40 percent). CU finished hitting 38 percent (23-of-60) but also was 30 percent from the 3-point line (7-of-23).
Martin Methodist also capitalized on the nine CU turnovers, scoring 13 points off those mishaps. The Tigers only turned the RedHawks over three times.
Campbellsville will now have 10 days before returning to the hardwood on Nov. 29. The Tigers host Midway College on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
