KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Lady Tiger Volleyball barely gave the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University a chance tonight, sweeping the second match of pool play at the NCCAA Championship.
Campbellsville (29-12) took off in the first set and held a 15-3 lead before the Warriors surrendered to their first timeout. Four kills by
Jessie Stone propelled the Lady Tigers to win the set, 25-11.
Southern Wesleyan (15-15) attempted a comeback, holding the Lady Tigers at 4-4 to begin the second set. Campbellsville broke the tie with a six-point run, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout at 10-4. The Warriors gained some momentum toward the end of the set, scoring five consecutive points, before CU ended the streak, winning the set 25-19.
Determined to end the match, the Lady Tigers began the third set, 4-0. The Warriors weren't letting them off the hook that easy, though, steadily catching up. Campbellsville called its first timeout of the set at 16-10 and went on to win the set, 25-16, and the match.
Campbellsville dominated in kills, collecting 40 compared to Southern Wesleyan's 23. Stone led the Lady Tigers' offense with nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage.
Katie Johnson had eight kills, and
Annija Abolina and
Maria Coelho followed with seven each.
Campbellsville's sported an overall hitting percentage of .269 compared to Southern Wesleyan's .019.
Inoa Fields assisted her teammates on 27 of Campbellsville's 37 kills, mustering more than the Warriors totaled.
Jessie Pendleton led the court's defense, collecting 23 digs compared to the Warriors' Katie Anderson who had 13.
Campbellsville will return to the Kissimmee Civic Center on Friday, Dec. 2 to take on Oklahoma Baptist University in the third round of NCCAA pool play at 10 a.m. The outcome of that match will determine whether CU advances to tone of two semifinals Friday night.
