Jordan, Szpila & Quint lead Lady Tigers to Opening Day split

PULASKI, Tenn. — Campbellsville softball opened the 2016 season at the Martin Methodist Meltdown this afternoon and came away with a split in the opening doubleheader of the season.

The eighth-ranked Lady Tigers fell to No. 15 Davenport in the season opener, 2-1 but came through with a 7-3 win over Madonna University in game two.

Game one vs. No. 15 Davenport

Davenport's starting pitcher Emily Maves (1-0) shutdown the Lady Tigers, allowing only three hits, one run and struck out 14 batters – one off her career which she set last season.

Victoria Decker (0-1) started in the circle for CU and kept the Panthers in check for the most part. Decker allowed three hits in six innings, walked three and struck out four Panther batters.

Davenport took first blood in the fourth inning after a leadoff walk came back to haunt the Lady Tigers. After picking up a fielder's choice and groundout back to the circle, Nicole Vitale hit a rocket off Hailey Szpila's glove at first base to score teammate Alyssa Koziol from second.

The Szpila error was the first of four committed in game one, as Campbellsville had seven combined in two games.

Senior Adrean Jordan went 1-for-3 but knotted the game at one with a lead off homerun to start the fifth inning - her 13th career long ball.

But Davenport struck once again in the sixth inning. After a leadoff error committed by Madison Mudd at shortstop, Lindsey Tasma advanced to second on a stolen base and then Koziol delivered the game-winner with an RBI double.

Game two vs. Madonna

Campbellsville took advantage of four Madonna errors and Hailey Szpila delivered the big blow in the fifth inning with a 3-run homerun to blast game two wide open

Neely Quint (1-0) held her own in the circle, finishing with a complete game eight-hitter. Quint allowed two earned runs, walked one batter and struck out two.

The Lady Tigers struck with single runs in the second and third innings. Szpila reached on a walk and Markie Smith delivered an RBI double to left field to score the games first run. In the third, Shelby Ray led off with a double to deep center field and the Lady Tigers played small ball to scratch another run. Ray advanced to third on a sac bunt by Rippy and Rebecca Miller scored Ray with a sacrifice fly.

CU added two more runs in the fourth. Jordan reached base on a hit by pitch and ended up scoring on Mudd's first career RBI single. Two batters later, Ray drove in her first run with another double to center field to score Mudd.

Campbellsville will now travel to the Auburn Montgomery/ Faulkner University classic next weekend. The Lady Tigers will open tournament play against Point University on Friday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. ET and then will play the host Warhawks at 3 p.m.
