Stephens leads Lady Tiger bowling at MSC Championship

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lady Tigers secured a third-place finish in the women's team competition at the 2016 Mid-South Conference Bowling Championship.

Chelsey Stephens, the 2015 runner-up, took seventh place in the singles competition. Her 922 pins were overshadowed by Jenna Coldiron's 1,027, who won the singles title for Pikeville. Bailey James was second on the CU squad, who landed in 20th place with 841 pins.

Mercedes Cote (22nd) and Crystal Land (24th) rounded out the top 25, with scores of 837 and 835, respectively. Keysha Martin knocked down 822 pins for 28th, and Haley Wade had 795 for 34th. Katlyn Hoeh tied 46th with Union College's Andrea Claypool, each with 761 pins. Kylah Martin finished out CU scoring in 48th place with 754 pins.

Stephens and Land were not able repeat their first-place doubles finish from 2015, finishing in sixth place. Lindenwood Belleville's Taylor Allen and Lauren Sides took this year's doubles title. Stephens/Land had the highest doubles score (446) in game one, totaling 1,757 pins, while CU's next pair of Wade and Cote knocked down 1,632 pins for 12th place. The teams of Martin/James and Martin/Hoeh came in 19th and 20th places, respectively.

In bracket play, two-seed Campbellsville took third place as a team. The Lady Tigers went up against Bethel University in the first round, handling them in five games (173-166, 156-145, 169-128, 206-235, 157-153).

The Lady Tigers were paired with Union College in the quarterfinal match. They won their first game with an astounding 245-127, then dropped the next two games. CU pulled together to win the last two in the seven-game struggle, 188-146 and 175-146.

Campbellsville met top-seeded Pikeville in the quarterfinal match, taking the second game 184-161 but were unable to pull out the match win. That put CU in the semifinals of the consolation bracket against Lindenwood. CU took Lindenwood Belleville to seven games after losing the first three. The Lady Tigers won the next three of the series (204-134, 154-136, 179-159, but could not hold on to after the Lynx' final push, dropping the match, 163-213.

Lindenwood Belleville was knocked off by Pikeville, the new MSC Champions, in the final.

The season is long from over for Lady Tiger bowling. They climb right back into competition mode this weekend at the Backhaul Direct Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis Ind., with play starting on Friday, Feb. 20 at 8 a.m.
