MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Campbellsville had possibly its toughest stretch of three games of the young season this weekend at the Auburn Montgomery/Faulkner Classic and the Lady Tigers finished with a 2-2 record.
On Day 2 of the Classic, the Lady Tigers were one-hit by No. 7 Mobile and then used a walk-off wild pitch to win over No. 9 William Carey in extra innings.
Seven Lady Tigers recorded hits on the day, while CU finished with a combined six total singles and one double.
Game one - Mobile 5, Campbellsville 0Â
No. 7 Mobile used a pair of crooked-number innings and pitcher Sydney O'Connor shut down No. 8 Campbellsville's offense in a 5-0 win. O'Connor pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and striking out nine.
Victoria Decker (0-3) is once again the tough-luck loser, as the CU offense has only been able to muster five total hits in her three starts this season. But in those three games, the Lady Tigers have faced No. 15 Davenport, No. 1 Auburn Montgomery and today, No. 7 Mobile.
Decker allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out six Ram batters in a 96-pitch performance.
Mobile's offense came alive in the fifth and sixth innings, sending 15 batters to the plate during that span. In the fifth, after picking up a quick out, the rally started with a hit-by-pitch. Decker was able to strikeout Kaylen Kosbab but Taylor Clinkenbeard singled to left-center to advance Kaitlyn Wood to third.
Tyler Winkler recorded an RBI single through the hole at second base and Anna Blake Barnette picked up a two-RBI double to deep left field to score the three runs for Mobile.
In the sixth, Chelsey Sizemore singled with one out and was followed by a swinging bunt in front of the plate. Decker's throw to second base was not in time to get Sizemore out, putting runners on first and second with one out.
After a strikeout, Mobile once again used its speed to caused havoc. A bunt base hit loaded the bases and two-consecutive diving plays by Madison Mudd and Rebecca Miller turned into base hits for the Rams, which in turn scored two runs.
The lone hit for CU came in the second inning with a leadoff single by Adrean Jordan.
Game two – Campbellsville 1, William Carey 0Â
Neely Quint (3-0) dominated in the circle allowing only five hits in a complete game shutout. Quint struck out seven William Carey batters and did not allow a free pass.
Campbellsville had a chance in the sixth inning with consecutive one-out singles by Brianna Scott and Markie Smith but the rally was negated after Rachel Denkins popped out and Morgan Gailor grounded out to end the inning.
After both pitchers worked out of jams in the seventh inning, the international tie-breaker went into effect and put a base runner on second base to start the inning. Quint allowed a bunt single to Cecilia Lawn and Chelsea Nette advanced to third. After a stolen base by Lawn, Quint worked herself out of the jam with a strikeout, line out and ground out.
Moving to the eighth, Rippy was placed on second base and Hailey Szpila moved her to third with a sac bunt. Adrean Jordan flied out but a wild pitch by William Carey pitched Rachel Hickman allowed Rippy to scamper home for the game-winner.
