Fox's late 3 & Burd's double-double leads Lady Tigers to OT

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Emily Fox nailed a deep 3-pointer with 10.5 seconds left in regulation and Lindsey Burd scored five of her 28 points in overtime, as No. 4 Campbellsville survived for a 75-70 victory over Cumberland University on Senior Day.

Burd finished with 28 points, 17 rebounds and four assists while fellow senior Kristen Jacob added 12 points and nine boards to end their careers at Powell Athletic Center. The two have been part of 113 wins and 24 losses in their four-year careers.

Cumberland (15-10, 4-8 MSC) scored the first five points in OT – two field goals by Jalita Fason and one free throw from Nicole Bowers, who bloodied her nose in the first half but played the final 25 minutes with cotton and tape keeping everything in place.

LeeAnn Grider's 15-footer and two foul shots by Burd pulled Campbellsville (23-6, 10-4 MSC) within a point before Madison Stewart's layup with 1:25 remaining put the home team ahead for good. Burd added one free throw with 32.8 seconds to play but then committed a foul to give the Phoenix a chance.

Hall, who is the best free throw shooter in the Mid-South, was unable to tie the game, missing the second free throw, and Burd hit two foul shots with 16.7 seconds remaining. Hall's 3-pointer on the other end was off the mark and Stewart netted two more at the charity stripe for the final points of the game.

Grider finished with nine points and nine assists, while Fox pitched in nine points and Stewart finished with seven.

Chelsey Hall tied her career-high with 30 points, including 23 in the second half and the extra period. Fason added 22 points and seven assists. Fason did have an open look with time expiring in regulation but it did not fall.

Campbellsville started slow in the first quarter, hitting just 3-of-16 from the floor but was able to hang around and trailed by only five points, 13-8 after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, Cumberland went ice cold. Neal's field goal at the 8:40 mark was the only bucket for the Phoenix in the quarter until Fason nailed a jumped with exactly two minutes remaining before halftime. But Campbellsville was unable to make a run either, scoring only five points in the stretch.

The two teams traded field goals until Grider nailed two foul shots with 26.9 seconds left to put The Lady Tigers ahead by two. Fason then hit a free throw with 4.1 seconds remaining to give the Lady Tigers a 23-22 lead at intermission.

The basketball careers of Lindsey Burd and Kristen Jacob were honored prior to today's game.

"Senior day is always such an emotional time. We get very attached to these girls and their families over their four years here," said coach Ginger Colvin. "It's so rewarding watching them grow into the people/players they are.

"These two are special to us. They have been very successful on and off the court. We are blessed to have such great leaders and examples for our team. Even though they are different in many ways, they have blended to form a perfect storm. They have poured their heart and soul into this program and we couldn't be more appreciative that they chose us."

With the win, Campbellsville can do no worse than a tie for second in the MSC. The tournament seeding will be announced after the completion of regular season play for all conference teams. The Mid-South Conference Tournament is scheduled for March 3-6 at the Frankfort Convention Center, Frankfort, Ky.
