ATLANTA, Ga. – In the first outdoor meet of the season, the two-day Emory Invitational yielded positive results for CU Track & Field. While the Lady Tigers did not score, the Tigers finished in 11th place overall with 30 team points.
Brett Pierce led the Tigers in the distance events. Pierce was runner-up in the men's 10K, finishing in 33:34.55. Corbin Harris placed fifth in the unseeded 1500-meter with a time of 4:23.01 and Will Ballard (16:43.76) and Ross Allen (17:00.34), came in first and sixth place, respectively, in the men's 5000-meter C-section.
Campbellsville saw two solid finishes in the men's 400-meter dash with Brandon Battle (51.45) and Jaron Jackson (51.52). They placed 20th and 22nd, respectively. Battle also gave CU one point with an eight-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.44 seconds and was a part of the men's 4x100-meter relay.
The relay, featuring Battle, Jackson, Webb, and Wiley, placed eighth with a time of :42.62 seconds, setting a new school record, previously at :42.89.
Senior Dylan Ford, in the men's sub-seeded 1500-meter run, downed another school record. Ford broke the previous record of 4:07.24 by almost a full second, finishing in 4:06.46 and earning third place in his section.
Newcomer Garland Webb gave the Tigers four points when he placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.77 meters. The freshman also placed 17th in triple jump with a 13.05-meter jump. Brayden Russell and Paxton Wiley stuck together throughout the men's high jump, going out at 1.80 meters which left them tied for 17th place. The lone Tiger to make it to 110-meter hurdles finals, Wiley scored four points for the Tigers with a fifth-place overall finish in :15.28 seconds.
Stuart Nichols just missed the scoring column in men's hammer with a throw of 38.50 meters. Aaron Johnson was just behind him at 36.60 meters and in 16th place.
The women struggled to score against the larger teams. Deja Thompson was just out of scoring range, picking up 10th in women's hammer throw with a distance of 36.86 meters and 23rd in shot put with a personal record of 10.44 meters. Just behind her in shot put was Tiaria Scott, throwing 10.10 meters for 32nd place. Freshman Halima Williams took 25th in hammer with a 28.43 meter throw.
Ja'Zell Woodard-Johnson (4.93m) and Jasmine Wilson (4.40m) jumped their way to 28th and 37th, respectively, in women's long jump. Woodard-Johnson also leapt 9.76 meters in women's triple jump to earn 26th place.
Maggie Calvert placed 21st for the Lady Tigers in the women's sub-seeded 1500-meter with a time of 5:19.40. Mallory Vest placed 13th in the unseeded race in 5:29.67.
Several athletes met the standards for NCCAA national championship meet in May. They include: Dylan Ford, 1500-meter; Stuart Nichols, hammer throw; Paxton Wiley, 110-meter hurdles; Garland Webb, long jump and triple jump; Brandon Battle, 400-meter and 200-meter; and Brett Pierce, 10K.
Campbellsville track and field will continue its outdoor season at the Pioneer Invitational at Transylvania University on Saturday, March 26. Field events are set to start at 10 a.m. ET, while running events start at noon.
