GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Campbellsville came from behind to win game two of the series but Georgetown College spoiled the Tigers sweep, stealing game three.
After dominating game one yesterday with an 8-0 win, Campbellsville rallied to win game two, 7-6, before falling in the nightcap, 4-2.
Game one – Campbellsville 7, Georgetown 6
Georgetown never allowed Campbellsville to take the lead until the Tigers went ahead 7-6 in the 10
th inning. GC scored a run in the first but Campbellsville answered in the third to knot the game at one -
Cameron Ketchen scored on a ground ball fielder's choice.
Georgetown came right back, though, scoring another run in the third and recapturing a 3-2 lead. Chaz Meadows reached base on an error and came around to score an unearned run off an RBI single by Jovan Hernandez.
Both teams traded runs in the fifth once again and Georgetown led 3-2 going into the sixth. Then the flood gates opened. GC scored three sixth inning runs off another Meadows hit. He delivered a 3-run double pushing Georgetown ahead, 6-3 and chasing starter
Nick Morehead out of the game.
But Campbellsville did not go down without a fight and got Morehead off the hook for the loss. After three consecutive singles by the Tigers, Meadows moved from third base to the mound for Georgetown replacing reliever Shawn Kennedy II. After a wild pitch scoring
Mike Castellano from third base,
Nestor Linares picked up an RBI single and Ketchen delivered a sac fly to knot the game at six.
Reliever
Justin Phillips came in to record one out in the sixth and also tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings before giving way to closer
Jake Pannunzio.
Pannunzio allowed a single to Meadows but picked him off first base to end the GC threat.
In the 10
th,
Romello Carbuccia led off with a walk and was moved to second on a sac bunt by
Jacob Carrera. Linares singled to left and
Casey Scott laid down a beautiful suicide squeeze to give Campbellsville its first lead, 7-6.
Pannunzio (3-0) allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom half but picked up the win on the mound.
Carbuccia led the Tigers with three hits, while Linares and Erickson body had two hits a piece.
Riley Joyce went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Meadows was the hot bat for Georgetown, going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs. Hernandez also caused havoc, picking up three hits and driving in two runs.
Game two – Georgetown 4, Campbellsville 2
It looked as if the Tigers were able bring the come-from-behind win momentum into game two of today's doubleheader but Georgetown was the team to rally.
CU scratched two runs in the first and second innings before Georgetown answered with three in the second and third.
Ketchen reached on a walk and stole second base to get into scoring position but jammed his hand and had to be replaced by pitcher
Nelson Quark. Already playing down a few position players, CU was limited on the bench. Quark ended up coming around to score in the first on Erickson's RBI double.
In the second, another injury haunted Campbellsville. Castellano hit a leadoff missile down the left field line but pulled up at first base with a hamstring injury.
Jarrod Ball replaced Castellano in the DH position and went 0-for-1.
Now missing two starters, CU had to get offense from somewhere else. They got it from
Jacob Carrera. He picked up an RBI single scoring Ball from second to push CU ahead, 2-0.
Then Georgetown scored three unanswered runs. Nicholas Lugo doubled to left-center field and scored on an RBI single by Hector Marmol.
In the third, Robert Longtree singled and advanced to third on a double by Meadows. Both came around to score after a two RBI single by Hernandez.
Mario Morales (4-3) started on the mound and went five innings allowing nine hits and three runs. He started the sixth inning but was unable to record an out as Georgetown loaded the bases. He gave way to
Irvin Ruiz, who then allowed a sac fly to Trey Gross pushing GC's lead to 4-2.
CU rallied in the sixth. After Ramirez walked to start the inning, he was replaced by
Miguel Solano. Ball moved him to second on a sac bunt but Solano was thrown out trying to advance on a ball in the dirt. The CU dugout went crazy and Coach
Beauford Sanders was thrown out of the game arguing the call.
Georgetown's Sean Hale shut Campbellsville down in the seventh, striking out two and picking up his first save of the season. Michael Koltak picked up the win for GC. He came into the game in the third inning, relieving starter Nick Sanchez who only lasted two innings and allowed the two CU runs.
Campbellsville will stay on the road and travel to Bryan College on Wednesday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. The Tigers return home next weekend to start a nine-game home stand with Lindsey Wilson College on Friday, April 1 at 5 p.m. ET.
