Lady Tigers win two on Day 1 of Gulf Shores Invite

Box Score 1

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Campbellsville overcame a five-error game against Columbia College tonight and secured a sweep of two games on the first day of the Gulf Coast Invitational.

The Lady Tigers beat Bethel 6-1 and then broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh against Columbia College when a bases-loaded single by Destiney Taul cleared the bags.

GAME 1: Campbellsville 6, Bethel 1

Neely Quint (4-1) did not give up an earned run and CU got three-RBI games from Brianna Scoot and Adrean Jordan to beat Bethel University 6-1 in the Lady Tigers first game today.

Kayla Guthrie scored on an error in the first inning, but that's the last time Bethel (7-3) would score. In the meantime, the Lady Tigers would go ahead in the bottom of the first, 3-1, and score two more times in the third and once in the fifth.

In the first inning, Jacqueline Roof followed her leadoff single with a stolen base and scored on Scott's double. Hailey Szpila would then walk and Jordan delivered a double and two RBIs.

In the third, Rebecca Miller reached safely and Scott picked up her second and third RBIs with a home run to centerfield.

In the fifth, Scott hammered a two-out double and scored on Jordan's single to center.

Quint went six innings, giving up five hits and striking out three. She did not walk a batter.

Morgan Gailer relived Quint in the top of the seventh and, after bobbling a ball from the leadoff batter, retired Bethel's next three batters to end the game.

Campbellsville (6-4) had nine hits in the game, three by Scott, two each from Roof and Jordan and singles by Brittany Rippy and Rebecca Miller.

GAME 2: Campbellsville 7, Columbia 4

Victoria Decker wasn't her sharpest and the five errors didn't help. Decker (3-3) gave up seven hits and walked five in six innings. Neely Quint came in with no outs and a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh and set Columbia down in order.

The Lady Tigers were outhit 7-5, but Columbia's Paxton Welch walked four and the Cougars committed three errors of their own.

CU (7-4) took a 2-0 lead in the second when Brittany Rippy was issued a one-out walk. Jacqueline Roof singled and Shelby Ray's squeeze bunt scored a run. Another run came across on Rebecca Miller's ground out.

Columbia retook the lead at 3-2 when Campbellsville committed two miscues along with three Cougar hits in the bottom of the second.

Adrean Jordan reached in the fourth on a one-out single and eventually scored on a passed ball. After Rippy was hit by a pitch, Roof's shot to third was misplayed and Rippy scored too.

It stayed that way until Columbia used a hit and two errors in the bottom of  the sixth to tie the score at 4-4.

In the top of the seventh, Brianna Scott singled with one out and Hailey Szpila reached on an error at second. Markie Smith walked with two outs to load the bases and that's when Destiney Taul delivered the knockout punch.

Campbellsville moves on to Day 2 of the Gulf Coast Invitational when they meet William Carey at 10 and Georgia Gwinnett at noon Saturday, March 5.
