Late free throws push CU to MSC semifinals on Saturday

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Campbellsville hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute and Dii'jon Allen-Jordan recorded his 14th double-double of the season to lead the Tigers past Shawnee State at the MSC Tournament, 74-70.

Four-seed Campbellsville (22-9) will now head to the Mid-South Conference quarterfinals and will tangle with No. 1 seed Georgetown College at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday. Fans can stream the game on the Mid-South Conference Sports Network – HERE. And also, live radio is available on the CU Sports Network, HERE.

Allen-Jordan led the Tigers with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Rob Robinson scored 16 points and hit 4-of-6 from the 3-point line.

The biggest advantage for Shawnee State (15-15) came via the offensive boards. The Bears grabbed 47 rebounds compared to CU's 32 but picked up 22 offensive boards. Fortunately for CU, Shawnee State only scored 12 second-chance points.

Campbellsville took its first double-digit lead with 14:52 to play, 47-37, but the fifth-seeded Bears would not go down easy. After CU matched that lead again, 51-41, Shawnee State went on a quick 7-0 run and got right back in the game with 9:20 left.

Then Elliott Young stepped up for the Tigers and drilled his first of two late 3s and pushed CU back ahead by eight points, 58-50, and started a 12-6 run for CU.

At the 4:57 mark, Ron Scott was called for his fourth foul and just seconds later the senior picked up his fifth to finish with just six points and one assist.

With the 3:10 left, Young delivered his second 3 to cap the run and pushed the Tigers ahead by nine points, 63-54. Shawnee State would answer with five quick points to cut the deficit to four, 63-59, but then it went to a chess match. CU would need to sink free throws, as Shawnee State knocked down two 3s to keep within striking distance and put the pressure on the Tigers at the line.

Sekou Harris started the streak of eight-straight free throws, while Allen-Jordan made four and Young pitched in two from the charity stripe. After a deep 3 by Ethan Moffatt to cut the lead to three, 73-70, Harris made 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds on the clock to put CU ahead by two possessions and seal the victory.

Campbellsville took advantage of 13 Shawnee State turnovers and scored 19 points off those mishaps. CU also outscored the Bears 19-8 in bench points as Shawnee State was playing without its leading scorer Devon Carter due to injury.
