Shawnee State wins second-straight MSC title over CU

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Campbellsville women's basketball had its worst shooting performance of the tournament, while Shawnee State University had its best and ended the Lady Tigers run at a sixth MSC tournament title, 75-62.

Shawnee State (28-5) repeats as champions after knocking off Campbellsville (25-7) last year in the MSC final. The sixth-ranked Lady Tigers are expected to pick up an automatic berth into the NAIA National Tournament in Independence, Mo. The qualifiers will be announced Wednesday, March 9.

Campbellsville finished hitting just 33 percent (23-of-69) and Shawnee State scorched the nets making 32-of-61 (52.5 percent). The Bears also hit 65 percent in the second half after trailing 26-25.

The Mid-South Conference Co-Players of the Year – Lindsey Burd and Ali Zieverink battled in the paint but Zieverink won today, finishing with game-highs in points (31) and rebounds (20) for her eighth double-double of the season. Burd wasn't much of a factor, scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds.

LeeAnn Grider led the Lady Tigers with a new career-high 25 points and Emily Fox followed with 13.

Campbellsville and Shawnee State battled back-and-forth from the start, as the score changed hands nine times and it was tied on three different occasions. The largest lead for the Tigers was four points, while the Bears held their largest lead of the three points twice in the first half.

After leading, 26-25 at halftime, Campbellsville came out running in the third quarter. Grider hit a jumper and then a 3 for a quick 5-0 run and went ahead by six points but Shawnee State answered. The Bears went on a 10-0 run and took a 35-31 lead with 5:21 left in the third.

Shawnee State extended their lead to as many as six points in the quarter and the Bears grabbed a 48-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Another quick 5-0 run in the fourth pushed the SSU lead to nine, 53-44 with 8:54 to play but the Lady Tigers weren't going down without a fight. Campbellsville cut the deficit to five points, 55-50 with a 6-2 run but the Bears countered with a 7-0 run to take the first double-digit lead, 62-50 with 5:08 left.

Shawnee State pushed its largest lead to 15 points with 3:29 remaining, 68-53, but Campbellsville had one late push. CU pulled with seven points with 2:23 left, however the Bears finished the game on a 7-1 run for their second-straight MSC title.

Shawnee State earned the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championships in Independence, Mo.
