GULF SHORES, Ala. — No. 1 Auburn Montgomery ended Campbellsville's run in the Gold Bracket of the Gulf Coast Invitational today, downing the Lady Tigers 2-1.
It marked the second time this season that AUM defeated CU, beating the Lady Tigers 2-0 on Feb. 19 in Montgomery, Ala.
Campbellsville went 5-1 in Gulf Shores Invitational to move its record to 10-5.
GAME 1: Campbellsville 7, Spring Hill 2Â
Jacqueline Roof hit a double and a home run and accounted for five runs as the Lady Tigers (10-4) beat Spring Hill (12-10) in the Gold Bracket of the Gulf Coast Invitational.
Roof and Madison Mudd practically did all the damage offensively as they had four of the Lady Tigers' seven hits. Shelby Ray, Markie Smith and Rebecca Miller had the other three.
Spring Hill's starter, Caroline Sagrera, hit three batters in the decisive second inning when CU scored four runs. Brianna Scott, and Mudd were both hit by pitches that were sandwiched around a Smith single. Destiney Taul also was hit and then Roof delivered a double to deep right-center that cleared the bases.
Mudd doubled to leadoff the fourth and scored on Roof's first homer of the season.
Campbellsville posted an insurance run in the sixth when Smith was hit by a pitch and a single by Mudd scored Kalin Bottoms, who was pinch running.
Victoria Decker danced around an 11-hitter, stranding 11 Badgers. Decker (5-3) struck out two and did not walk a batter in her seven innings of work.
GAME 2: Auburn Montgomery 2, Campbellsville 1Â
AUM (20-1) used three hits and two errors in the fourth inning to score all the runs it would need in putting away CU for the second time this season.
The big blow came off the bat of Kayla Hale as she drove in two runs with a double in the fourth inning.
Neely Quint (5-2) gave up six hits, three in the pivotal fourth inning. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Taylor Powell pitched a two-hitter for AUM, allowing only a single to Rebecca Miller in the bottom of the first and an inside-the-park homer in the sixth. She struck out six Lady Tigers.
Campbellsville returns home Friday, March 11 for a noon doubleheader with Kentucky Christian University at Veterans Memorial Park.
