Lady Tigers run win streak to 21 with sweep of Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Hailey Szpila went 3-for 5 and knocked in five runs as Campbellsville held off a pesky University of the Cumberlands team, 6-3, 9-0, to sweep the four-game series and run its record to 37-7, 21-1 MSC.

The Lady Tigers had to rally to win game one and Neely Quint squelched two threats from the Patriots in game two to seal their 21st consecutive victories.

GAME 1: Campbellsville 6, Cumberlands 3

Campbellsville banged out 10 hits and had a big three-run fifth inning to win, 6-3.

Victoria Decker (20-4) scattered eight hits and struck out three - her 20 wins is the most in a single-season as she had 19 in each of her first three seasons. She got in trouble in the top of the fourth when Cumberlands tied the score at 3-3 and only hit two balls past the pitching circle.

On consecutive plays at the plate, the Patriots scored on a dropped catch and then slipped in under Markie Smith's tag.

Jacqueline Roof and Hailey Szpila both had two-RBI games. Roof had a solo homer in the third and drove in a run with a triple in the fifth. Szpila's two runs came in the second when she hit a shot off the scoreboard in right center.

Shelby Ray, Brianna Scott, Smith, Adrean Jordan, Destiney Taul and Madison Mudd all had hits in the game.

Elisa Mauldin, Madison Monnin and Clara England had two-hit games for Cumberlands.

GAME 2: Campbellsville 9, Cumberlands 0

CU scored four runs inn the first inning and kind of put the Patriots on their heels. Nevertheless, Cumberlands (18-23, 6-18 MSC) had two runners on base in both the first and second innings with less than two outs. UC left eight runners stranded, six in the first three innings.

Neely Quint (16-3) pitched four innings of five-hit ball, striking out three. Morgan Gailor pitched an inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Brittany Rippy hit a solo home run in the fourth, her first of the season.

Brianna Scott and Hailey Szpila led the eight-hit attack with two hits apiece. Jacqueline Roof, Shelby Ray, and Adrean Jordan accounted for the other hits.

Campbellsville goes on the road to play Cumberland University on Tuesday, April 12 in a 2 p.m. MSC doubleheader in Lebanon, Tenn.
