Track & field sets a number of personal bests this weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Campbellsville track & field saw improvement in several throws and distance events in the cold weather at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational this weekend.

Despite the below-freezing chill, the Lady Tigers saw a school record go down in the discus throw. Freshman Halima Williams broke the previous mark with a throw of 32.55 meters. She finished in sixth place, followed by Lindsey Burd's personal best (8th, 32.17m), Madison Kaiser (10th, 31.81m), and Deja Thompson with a personal best (15th, 27.30m).


In women's javelin. Kaiser placed second, while Burd, Mallory Vest, and Gracie Martin finished in the top nine, each with personal bests. Burd continued her successful weekend on Saturday by scoring in the women's shot put, taking third with a 12.20-meter toss.

Tiaira Scott tallied one point for the Lady Tigers in the women's hammer throw, recording her personal best throw of 33.64 meters.

Highlighting the men's throwing events were Aaron Johnson and Stuart Nichols, going 1-2 in the men's hammer throw. Johnson marked a lifetime best throw, taking first with his 44.62-meter throw. Nichols (44.11m) recorded a throw just behind Johnson's, and Clay Embry (37.79) placed seventh in the same event with a personal best.

Johnson completed the weekend with a third-place finish in the discus throw (40.16m), while Michael Hunt was next for the Tigers in 19th place (30.22m). Hunt also threw a personal best in the men's shot put, marking at 12.11 meters and taking 11th place.

Another record was broken Saturday, this one in the men's 5000 -meter racewalk. Brandon Wiseheart walked his way to a six-minute improvement personal best, breaking his own record. He finished with a time of 30:58.12, taking third place.

In other distance events, several personal and season bests were set by both the Tigers and the Lady Tigers. Bret Crawford placed fourth in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.78. He was followed by Dylan Ford with a season best (4th, 2:01.29) and Will Ballard (5th, 2:04.25) and Corbin Harris (11th, 2:06.96), both with personal bests.

Crawford (4:10.68) and Ford (4:14.36) placed third and eighth in the men's 1500-meter, respectively.

On the women's side, personal records were set by four Lady Tigers in the 800 meters. Julianna Bradley also ran a personal best in the 1500-meter run. Vest placed second in the women's steeplechase with a season-best time of 12:49.89.

The men's 400-meter relay won the event with a time of 43.75 seconds and the 1600-meter relay took second in 3:32.43 minutes. Brandon Battle, a member of both relay teams, also took fourth in the men's 200-meter dash and third in the 100-meter dash. His mark of 11.17 seconds, with a headwind, qualified him for the NCCAA Championship meet in May.

Paxton Wiley took fifth in the 200-meter and won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.67 seconds. Clay Embry took second in 16.53 seconds.

Garland Webb took fourth in the men's long jump, and Irell Patterson finished second in men's high jump (1.88m). Webb, Christian Thurman, and Brayden Russell all scored in the triple jump event.

Elise Shainfield scored for the Lady Tigers in women's pole vault with her season-best mark of 2.60 meters. Fellow newcomer Ja'Zell Woodard-Johnson took fifth in the 200-meter in 27.30 seconds. She and Jasmine Wilson took sixth and seventh in the women's triple jump.

Although no official team scores were calculated for the two-day meet, the Tigers would have come out on top based on their point totals, taking first place out of 14. The Lady Tigers would have been 6th of 16.

Campbellsville track will return to competition in just five days at the Centre College Twilight Meet on Friday, April 15. Field events are set for noon. ET start, while running events will begin at 5 p.m.
