CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Looking for revenge of an earlier loss on March 30, Tiger baseball rallied from behind to knock off the 15th-ranked Bryan College Lions at HIG Field, 6-5 in a non-conference tilt.
The 21st-ranked Tigers picked up a spectacular performance out of the bullpen from
Nelson Quark (1-1) and finally got to Lions starter Brandon Marklund in the fourth and fifth innings chasing him out of the game.
Quark relived CU starter
Irvin Ruiz in the second inning after Bryan College took an early 4-0 lead. Ruiz only went 1 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs in his 51-pitch performance. But what is a team without having each others back? Quark shined on the mound tossing five innings in relief, allowing only three hits and striking out two for his first win of the season.
The Tigers rallied with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and what ended up being the game-winner in the sixth.
Cody Erickson started the come back with his third home run of the season – a two run shot to right field cutting Bryan's lead in half, 4-2. Then CU came alive in the fifth to regain the lead. After a leadoff hit-by-pitch by
Diego Reynoso,
Jacob Carrera singled to right field to put runners on the corners with one out. Senior
Casey Scott delivered the game-tying blow with a two-run double to left-center field to know the game at four. But CU wasn't finished, as
Cameron Ketchen singled on the first pitch he saw to drive in Scott to give the Tigers the lead.
The Lions went to Hunter Tipton for the final three innings and CU added an insurance run in the sixth – a run that was much needed and came on a crazy play.
Riley Joyce hit a missile down the right field line for a head-first sliding triple but Bryan College's second baseman Evan Speicher airmailed his relay throw to third base and allowed Joyce to score on the error.
The Tigers were led by Ketchen, Erickson and Joyce all picking up two hits a piece. Erickson and Scott led CU with two RBI.
Quark went back out for the seventh but Bryan College put runners on second and third with one out forcing CU to make a change and go to
Justin Phillips. Phillips walked the first man he faced and Andrew Urbistondo delivered a sac fly to center field to pull the Lions back within one, 6-5. Phillips got out of the jam with a groundout by pinch hitter Cody Rhinehart.
Then "Enter Sandman". Closer
Jake Pannunzio came on in relief for a two-inning, six-out close – his Mid-South Conference leading 11
th save of the year.
