Tigers take title, as multiple records go down at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. – Good things were happening this weekend at the Centre College Twilight Meet as Campbellsville track & field had multiple personal bests, school records were broken, and a hand full of student-athletes qualified for the NAIA Championships in May.

The Tigers scored 153 points to win the meet, beating 14 teams, while the women scored 103 points to take third of 13.

Campbellsville's throws got an early start as Lindsey Burd began her record-breaking day by taking third in women's discus throw. She broke the record and threw a personal best of 34.28 meters, while Madison Kaiser and Halima Williams took sixth and eighth, respectively, with personal bests of their own.

CU went 4-5-6 in women's hammer throw, led by Deja Thompson with a 36.47-meter toss. Burd stole the day in women's shot put with her first collegiate win, a new school record, and an NAIA B-standard mark. She threw 13.36 meters, just .14 meters under the A-standard of 13.50m.

Kaiser threw the javelin 30.23 meters to take third in the event, followed by Lindsey Burd, Mallory Vest, and Gracie Martin going 5-6-7, each with season bests.

In men's throws, Stuart Nichols took first in hammer with a 44.64-meter toss. Aaron Johnson took fourth and Clay Embry took seventh and qualified for the NCCAA Championships in May.

Johnson also took second in the discus, throwing 39.16 meters. Johnson and Nichols set personal bests in the shot put, while Michael Hunt took sixth with a personal-best throw of 12.12 meters. Conner Stockton took eighth in the same event.

Corbin Harris led the Tigers in the javelin, placing sixth with a personal best of 42.84 meters. He was followed by Brayden Russell (41.44m) in seventh place. Russell also placed seventh in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 60.77 seconds, sixth in the triple jump (12.63m), and sixth in the high jump (1.83m).

On the track, Paxton Wiley qualified with the NAIA B-standard in the men's 110 hurdles, running a personal-best 14.94 seconds. He won the event, while Clay Embry took fourth.

Despite bad handoffs, the 4x100-meter relay team (Brandon Battle, Jaron Jackson, Wiley, Garland Webb) set a new school record with a time of 42.38 seconds, placing second.

Battle was the 200-meter individual champion in 21.73 seconds and the men's 100-meter runner-up in 10.84, just .10 seconds shy of the NAIA qualifying standard. Wiley took fifth in both events. Both Wiley and Battle qualified for the NCCAA meet with their 100-meter times.

Battle (51.07) and Jackson (51.11) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 400 meter dash and qualified for NCCAA with those times. Lucas Pennington set lifetime bests in both the 200 (26.09) and 400 (58.96).

Garland Webb led the Tigers in jumps. He was the event champion in men's long jump, marking 6.75 meters, and he placed fourth in triple jump. Christian Thurman scored for the Tigers as well, placing seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump.

Gracie Martin contributed with a fourth-place finish in the long jump and a fifth-place performance in the 400. Madison Kaiser and Elise Shainfield set personal bests in the 400 meter hurdles, and Shainfield took eighth in the women's pole vault.

Highlighting the distance events were Mallory Vest, who won the women's 3k steeplechase, and Bret Crawford, who took third in the 800 meter dash and fourth in the 1500 meter run, qualifying for NCCAA in both. Crawford (4:02.38) and Adam Sandidge (4:05.07) both broke the school record in the 1500.

Dylan Ford placed sixth in both the 1500 and 800, with a personal best in the half-mile at 2:00.55 minutes. Wade Harris ran a personal-best time of 16:57.45 minutes in the 5000 meter run. Johannesburg Boulware took fifth place in his steeplechase debut.

On the women's side, Maggie Calvert and Julianna Bradley ran personal best times in both the 1500 and the 800. Calvert, who placed eighth in the 1500 with a season-best 5:13.20, also contributed to the seventh-place finishing 4x400-meter relay team. The same men's relay took fifth. Brandi Thomas also scored for the Lady Tigers, placing seventh in the 5000m.

Campbellsville track & field will take a weekend off before returning to the track for the Mid-South Conference Championships on April 29-30. The event, hosted by University of the Cumberlands, will begin Friday afternoon with the men's and women's 4x800 meter relay.
