BOWLING GREEN, Ky. —
James Higgins opened the Mid-South Conference Championship with a two-over 74 and Campbellsville is tied for fifth place at Bowling Green Country Club.
Higgins carded a birdie on his opening nine holes but dropped four shots for a 39 on the front. He came right back with a trio of birdies on the back nine but bogeyed the par five 18
th to fall in a tie for 11
th.
Four other Tigers shot in the 70s with
Robert Johnson and
Jared Fannin both tied for 25
th with 77s.
Wade Cave fired a 79 and is tied for 31
st. Rounding out Campbellsville was
Justin Riffle with an eight-over 80 to be tied for 34
th.
University of the Cumberlands leads the team tournament after a first round of even par. Led by Ben Kendrick's one-under 71, the Patriots have two others tied for fifth – Forian Loutre and Callum McGuigan (72). Michael Murphy finished with a one-over 73 to be tied for eighth place.
Lindsey Wilson College is second in the team standings and is led by Jonathon Grabara's one-under 71. Cumberland University is third after a team score of 296 but the Phoenix's Peyton Broyles, who is playing as an individual, shot the low round of the day with a two-under 70 to lead after Round 1.
In the men's field, there are 10 total players three shots off of Broyles' lead.
University of Pikeville is in front of of the Tigers in fourth place by four shots. Campbellsville is tied with Georgetown College and St. Catharine for fifth and Shawnee State rounds out the teams in eighth place.
The average score for all 44 golfers in the field was 76.9.
