DAYTON, Tenn. — After pushing its winning streak to 29 games with a 4-1 victory in game one, Bryan College pulled the upset in game two, defeating No. 4 Campbellsville 5-1.
Jacqueline Roof had three of the 11 CU hits and drove in all five runs in the doubleheader with two of those knocks being home runs. She is now tied with Brianna Scott for the team lead with 15 long balls on the season – two behind the single-season program record.
But the NAIA's longest win streak came to an end after 29 games – which is another program record. Campbellsville falls to 44-8, while Bryan College improves to 26-20 on the season.
Game one – Campbellsville 4, Bryan 0 – Box Score
Roof put the Lady Tigers ahead with a solo shot in the first at bat of the game and that was all Victoria Decker (24-4) needed to shut down the Lions. Decker allowed just two hits and struck out three to pick up her 23rd complete game and 10th shutout to lead Campbellsville.
After singles by Destiney Taul and Madison Mudd in the second inning, Roof delivered again, this time a 3-run home run to push the Lady Tigers ahead 4-0.
CU had a chance to add on in the fifth but was blanked. Scott and Hailey Szpila both singled to lead off the inning but base running ran the Lady Tigers out of an opportunity. Scott was thrown out trying advance to third on the Szpila single and CU picked up two quick outs to end the threat after that.
Game two – Bryan 5, Campbellsville 1 – Box Score
The Lions came out swinging in the opening inning. After three consecutive singles a sac fly led to the first run. But starter Morgan Gailor (2-1) worked out of the jam and only allowed the one run to score after loading the bases with zero outs.
CU answered in the second and took advantage of a pair of walks. Markie Smith led off with a free pass and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Taul. After another walk, Roof singled to right field to score Smith and knot the game at one.
But Gailor allowed another run in the third and Bryan College would not look back scoring runs in the next two innings. A leadoff double by Kim Borowski ended up coming around to score on another sac fly to push BC ahead, 2-1.
Neely Quint came on in relief in the fourth and pitched the final three innings. The Lions added another run in the fourth after a two-out single by Olivia Gore.
The final Bryan College run came in the fifth inning and once again the rally started with another leadoff double. Becca Zimmerman picked up an RBI single and she came around to score on an error by second baseman Shelby Ray.
Campbellsville was able to get two runners on in the seventh but the rally was unsuccessful.
The Lady Tigers now wrap up their regular season and will head into the Mid-South Conference tournament scheduled for Friday-Sunday, April 29-May 1 at Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, Ky. CU will be the No. 1 seed after winning their seventh MSC regular season title.Â
