Tigers fall 12-2 to Cumberland in MSC series opener

LEBANON, Tenn. — Campbellsville's pitching staff walked a season-high seven batters and Cumberland University put together 13 hits to rout the Tigers, 12-2, in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Earnest L. Stockton Field.

The Tigers (29-14, 12-7 MSC) are now a half game out of first-place in the Mid-South Conference standings. Lindsey Wilson College leads the standings by a half game at 12-6 and the Blue Raiders travel to St. Catharine College with a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

Box Score

Nick Przybylek (7-2) didn't have his best stuff today, walking four batters and allowing six earned runs in four innings of work. The four walks and six earned runs were the most given up all season and the four innings pitched was the shortest outing of the year.

Stephen Fischer (9-2) pitched a complete-game six-hitter for Cumberland while head coach Woody Hunt picked up his 1,500th career win as a head coach.

The Phoenix scratched two runs in the first inning after a one-out walk and hit-by-pitch. Kyle McGrew tripled to right-center field to put Cumberland ahead, 2-0.

In the second, Przybylek walked the leadoff batter Tyler Yorko but picked up two-straight outs. Then leadoff hitter Gabe Lares delivered a two-out hit to center field for the third run.

Campbellsville answered in the third after a Romello Carbuccia double. Miguel Solano was hit by a pitch and Casey Scott went opposite field for a run-scoring double down the right field line. Cameron Ketchen then delivered a sac fly to score Solano cutting the deficit to one, 3-2.

Carbuccia and Scott led the Tigers with four combined hits. Carbuccia delivered two doubles, while Scott had a double and a single. Cody Erickson had a double and Richard Ramirez finished with a single for the other two CU hits.

Cumberland put a four-spot up in the fourth and it all started with another triple. Josh Croft picked up a one-out three-bagger and ended up scoring on a single by Hector Viera. After consecutive wild pitches, Lares singled home two more runs for the Phoenix.

Ryan Norrix replaced Przybylek in the fifth inning but was only able to record one out. He allowed three walks and two run-scoring hits before Irvin Ruiz came on in relief.

Ruiz pitched the final 2.1 innings and Cumberland scored another trio of runs for the run-rule victory.

Campbellsville's fate is in its own hands and will meet Cumberland for the series-ending doubleheader tomorrow at 2 p.m.
